The 2012 Olympics is coming up close, which means an opportunity to make money from betting on most golds, total gold, most medals etc. I'm still debating whether to put my money on China winning most golds or the USA winning most golds. USA is the favorite this year according to all the betting sites I've been to,but China won 51 gold in 2008 compared to 36 gold of the USA.

Historically there has been a home field advantage in the Olympics, but it may look like China is breaking it.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/50688-the-olympics-is-there-home-field-advantage

    China 2000 28 gold 24 silver 31 bronze for a total of 59 medals
    China 2004 32 gold 17 silver 14 bronze for a total of 63 medals
    China 2008 51 gold 21 silver 28 bronze for a total of 100 medals

The two main factors to how well a country does in the Olympics is population and per capita wealth. From 2000 to 2010 China had increased its population by 5.9%,and its per capita wealth from $800 to $4,000. http://www.globaltimes.cn/business/china-economy/2009-12/493299.html

Population is certainly not the criteria for judging how many medals the country will win,
Instead about how developed the country is might be a better one ,

Consider India as a example,we have largest population on the planet but we still struggle to get medals, this is because we have corrupt sports organizations and bad government policies towards sports :p

Also, No doubt this year too China will top the Medal tally

According to 2010 stats China has [FONT=arial, sans-serif]1,338,300,000 people whereas India has 1,224,615,000 people. Its a combination of both how well developed a country is and the population size, and the attitude towards sports like you mentioned. In the United States High School size usually means a better football team due to the fact that there is a larger student body to draw from. A school with 500 students usually will not have as many good potential players then a school with 1500 students. There are exceptions, such as schools where people go to play football.

I think China will get less gold medals then last time, but will probably be the top(both total and most gold) at this years Olympics with the UK coming in at 3rd,and the USA in second.
