The best way to "master" SEO is to continually read new ideas, test them, tweak them, and add some twists to them. The SEO game is always changing, and only those who are willing to adapt and work their asses off trying and refining techniques will come out on top.
It can be a tricky field since the big G is a finicky beast, but definitely satisfying to see your sites climbing to number 1.
