Hey guys. I wouldn't feel nearly as bad if I was still 18 but it's been a crazy fast past 2 years and now here I am sitting and 20 years old. I'm not sure what I want to do in life as a career and the worst part is that all my friends are in school and seem to know exactly what they want to do. I have a passion for health and fitness and is competing in a bodybuilding competition in 5 months but other than that I'm not sure where my "path" in life belongs. How did you guys figure out what you wanted in life at this age?

    Thanks

At the age of yours my B.tech (cs) was completed and i was searching for a job . Focus on one thing , think what you want to become after 10 year will that profession will give you enough earning to live a social life and when you are ready with a goal work hard to achieve that.

Best of luck for your future.

The answer will come to you when it is supposed to come to you. Just listen to your heart.

I would go to school but ultimately I know that would be a huge waste of money and time as I would basically be pulling cards out of a hat. Don't even know what would interest me in school.

Well, deciding if you want to get your bachelors or not is a big decision. First, I'd figure out if what you enjoy doing has a useful degree or not. People complain about degrees being useless but really, it's just certain types of degrees. Do some diligence on schooling and careers on the internet, and consider getting a useful degree if you're not the type of person that would drop out. Being into body building isn't really enough information about your goals and motivation in life to give you much instruction. Do you want to be a trainer? Own your own gym? What would be fun to you?

Getting education is not a huge waste of money but it is your choice . If you are taking part in body building competition set your goal to be winner of that and work hard for that only , don't think of any other work . Just concentrate over your goal and achieve that.

The only things I know for sure are that I am more of a hands on type of person. I like doing things hands on and learning things hands on. I like to keep to my self and work on things by myself (which is why I found the sport of bodybuilding so attractive as I don't need to rely on a team)

Im 19 and bodybuilding is also a passion of mine. I came to school to like your friends, and am doing nutrition and food science to get into dietetics. If it is really what you enjoy and have a passion for, that should be the motivation to get through school right there. They even have strictly online schools. But if you dont think school is for you, which I sometimes think it isnt for me either, even though society says it is for "everyone", then there are still plenty of other ways to get into what you love. Start your own gym, be a personal trainer, get into the supplement business (which isnt hard to do btw), or hell even become a pro bodybuilder and get paid for it. The opportunities are endless, your mind is just limiting you.

Where do you work right now? And how do you like it? Have you ever worked at a gym?

All I'm going to say is do what you feel like doing. This way you will have no regrets and no one to blame but yourself. There's a good old saying, "As you sow, so shall you reap." So remember to think for yourself so that no matter what happens you've only got yourself to blame and no regrets for listening to others when you could have listened to yourself. Just don't let life happen, because if you do nothing time will pass and life will definitely not wait for you to make your mind up. ;)

Well, I always knew that I didn't want to be in school, and at 16 I left and started working in a call center. By 20 I gave that up for IM. Since you are in an IM forum, I'm guessing you are interested in getting into it.

You seem to be passionate about health and fitness, going by your post, so if I were you I would start blogging about it. It is much easier when you are writing about something you are deeply interested in and it doesn't even seem like work. Look around the forum here, there is lots of information about both blogging and the health niche in general. Just a suggestion, but it is somewhere to start.

You can always still enter into the bodybuilding competitions could even take up a job as a fitness instructor at the same time.

Your still young. And by the way your friends dont know what they are doing. They have just fallen into the "college solves everything" trap; and sadly they wont realize this until they have 60,000 in debt and find out they will never pay it off with their worthless BA degree and 2.0 GPA.

Set your sights on making loads of money in IM, that way you can just float through life doing as you please. If I had not started IM, I would still be sat there in and out of shyte jobs thinking exactly the same as you are now.

Bingo. I can count the number my good friends from college on one hand that are in the same field that they got their degree in. The others have bounced around not sure what the hell to do, and ended up taking "anything that would pay the bills" because they have wives and kids.

You are young...find what you love, and then find a way to make money doing it. Even if that takes you the next 3-4 years you will still be better off than those that are just finishing school $100k in debt, questioning what they are doing as they are sitting in 2 hours of bumper to bumper traffic to get to their desk job that pays them $48k a year.

Don't think like this... "must be done with college at 22, $50k a year by 25, married at 27, and 3 kids by 30" ...that is the death of so many peoples dreams.

    Find what makes you happy.

Consider the oilfield bud, I dropped out of school as a business major and went to the oilfield doing coil tubing work. I am now an operator in Australia for a US company. I am about to be 24. You say you are a bodybuilder, Well oilfield companies love a strong back, and you don't need a degree to start at the bottom and work to the top.

Did i mention this is my first oilfield job, and My salary is 70k and I get a day bonus when I am in the field? take a look at everything going on in North Dakota.
