I have a product review site I started back in Jan targeting 2 KWs, the first KW is "product name" and gets 5000 searches a month. The second KW is "product name reviews" and gets 1000 searches a month. Im targeting both KWs on a 1 static homepage.

Within 3-4 months Id say, "product name reviews" jumped to #1 and has been there ever since. Where as "product name" got to about #100 then droped off and has been sitting at spot #5-600 for the last couple months.

Ive done just about every type of backlinking possible, linkpushes, AMR, blog comments, social BM, etc. Why is it doing this and what can I do to get it to #1?

No one knows. The only way we could determine that is if we were psychic or we worked for google. I am seeing a lot of weird things like that with my site right now. remember, it is an algorithm that ranks your site. Sometimes, I think we forget that. SOmething on site, something off site, competition, who knows. I wouldn't worry about it. If it is that hard to rank that keyword, just move on and find ten longer tail keywords that are way easier to rank for

You may have over anchorized the main keyword (product name) causing this affect.

Over Anchorized meaning you have way too many backlinks with just the product name. This can especially happen when you do big blasts targetting just 1 anchor text.

This may not be the actual cause, but it's certainly a possibility for you to look at.

Now that I think about it, I had a similar situation which could have been the same thing. I was ranking page 2, did a blast to web 2.os with exact keyword and now that page isn't even in top 100. The weird thing is that the web 2.o is number one. WTF right?

Ive read that your need to really vary your anchor text so this sounds pretty reasonable. With that I have a question though, when your targeting 1 KW how do you vary it? All the anchor texts I used on this site are

    product name
    product names
    product name reviews

With such a specific KW how do you vary your anchor text without straying to far away from your main KW?

You do not want just your keyword as your anchor text. Sometimes use your website url, random names, something random. The point of backlinking is you want it to look as natural as possible and only using your keyword looks more like spamming.

Go look at anchor of some good ranking sites - The have mainly their brand name as keyword, which means your Domain Name ( with or without www )

You can go this route, building a brand. Go check out for example big keywords as "credit .." it's not the sites with the most backlinks ranking 1#.

Else the different way, you need to REALLY vary your anchor. Instead of 3 keywords, go for 50+. But still use your MAIN keyword most of the time. Most of the time it will be different anchors used only 1-2 times.

You can start with AdWords Keyword tool and grab yourself some long-term keywords.

Doing it that way you have done it, from my testings you can ONLY rank for the search-terms, you have optimized for. If you play by the natural-rules, you can get positions for a LOT of long-term keywords and this will bring you even more traffic.

Or how Ryan Leslie say's: Les(s) is more
