I just took on a client who has two pages (the homepage and an inner page) trying to rank for a very similar keyword.

The titles are not an exact match, but the homepage is "Cars & Trucks" and the inner page is "Cars" and the keyword he wants to improve for is "Cars." My guess is the keyword would rank better if it was being solely targeted through the homepage instead of an inner page as well. The inner page currently ranks on the third page of the SERPs.

How do I re-target an inner page keyword without doing a 301 re-direct to the homepage?

Actually, you can easily control which page to rank using your backlink. Use the page url with the keyword on your backlink campaign and google will easily know which one to pick :)
