So I ran across this story

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/nov/23/ceo-mathew-blanchfield-tells-pro-trump-republican-/

The CEO of an Albuquerque-based internet marketing firm has issued a letter telling clients who support President-elect Donald Trump to take their business elsewhere.
Mathew Blanchfield, who runs 1st in SEO, posted the letter describing Mr. Trump as “a racist, sexist, fascist” earlier this month on his company’s website.

    Now check out his yelp

    https://www.yelp.com/biz/1st-in-seo-albuquerque-4

For the short term he will get some traffic. Maybe 6 months from now his rankings might shoot up, who knows.

    This is tricky.

He's against Trump and thinks Trump is "racist, sexist, fascist" so he doesn't want to help rank someone's site that supports Trump. To me this is understandable.

The way he went about it is wrong tho, could have did better.

I'm all for viral content, it's the most powerful aspect of seo imo, but me personally I keep the politics out of the limelight. It will be interesting to see where he is in a year.

Why turn away so many customers, and give your competitors an edge over you.

What the f*ck is up with all these new age pseudo business people that put own petty beliefs ahead of the $$$.

I don't know man. We all get into this game for money. The dude is going on Fox News tonight. I'm going to record it for later. I'm sure his clients are going to love this.

In this case it seems to be his morals.

Doing SEO for anyone is a big deal, you are setting that person's business up for (hopefully) big success over (hopefully) multiple years.

For me personally I wouldn't do what he did it's understandable.

At some point you have to draw the line between money and morals.

Say someone offers you 1 billion dollars BUT if you accept the money 1 billion people are killed. Would you take the money?

The above is an extreme example but you get the idea. :)

If I was a service provider I'd do seo for anyone as long as I can legally do business with them or the penalty is a fine(not criminal penalty) that is less than the profit. I'd just make sure to have multiple businesses for catering to people with different ideologies(due to boycotting) and make sure to have someone else as the image for the business.

I can agree with that to a point. We've all had potential clients at one point that we steered to someone else.

The only win here for the dude is, let's say in 6 months trump really messes up, then he will be the lone internet marketing that stood up against him. It's one hell of a gamble.

But he didn't "stand up" to anyone, just made a negative comment towards millions of potential customers.

I think that's what he wants to paint the picture as. I'm sure his interview on fox later will reveal more.

Its going to be funny when his business drops because he decided to have morals and not common business sense.

We have one of those SEO companies here in SLC. When I checked the rankings of the sites the company operates, none of the companies ranked on the first page for their keywords.

It is my belief that those that can, actually do. Those that can't sell SEO services to people that do not know better. Why sell a service if you can rank your site for a greater profit? Therefore, I do not place much stock in 1st in SEO.

    This guy is genius..

Take a look at this picture:

If he just gets 1% of clients from California or NY alone he'll be making a lot more money

I think he is the opposite of a genius.

Smart business people do not alienate over 1/2 of his possible clients and they do not market using topics that are controversial.

That map means bupkis - he looks to me like a person that has a limited vision and wants to capitalize on the news. That is fine short term and I bet he generates some decent immediate revenue but long term, my money is on his site having decent links and being used for a PBN by someone with more foresight.

Has he made the right call ? Wonder how many forums, news sites and blogs are sharing the story ? No such thing as bad publicity

Yeah it might not work in direct business like this , but we all thought the same thing about Trump in the beginning... and now he's President

The map is just the results of what the general public thinks, the position of people that can spend $10k,$20k, and more a month on SEO services may be enitrelly different. And many businesses have a non-discrimination policy and may choose to not use his services or continue using his services.

"We all thought" is an absolute and usually not accurate. This much I know from 40 years in business. Being neutral works best long term.

People are people and your average businessman wants to stay away from controversy as they want to reach as many people as possible.

I'll put that domain on my watch list for a PBN as I expect it to be available in the next couple of years and it is sure to have some nice inbound links.

    Good discussion in this thread.

Controversy is really complicated to do, its not something that is helpful in most industries. Just because Eminem got popular by being so controversial back in the late 90's early 00's doesn't mean that your business will succeed by doing controversial stuff. The old idea of bad publicity is still publicity is bs, a person gets labeled as a pedo and has their name all over the news its going to hurt them and they will never be able to recover their image.

This has a small chance of working. If it does work, we should call it the political twist. Publicly oppose a hot bed political topic. Go viral and hope you get conversions. A reminder that the dude will be on fox news now.

As of now the dude has 44 yelp reviews mainly all 1 star. Let's see what a interview on fox news will do to this.
