10000+ incoming links to my site since yesterday on WMT

Yesterday I checked WMT for one of my websites and noticed the 'incoming links' had shot up from around 50 to over 10000. Since the feature to download latest links on WMT takes around a week to update I don't have any idea where these links could be coming from. I've checked other backlink checkers like ahrefs and majestic, but they haven't discovered any of these mysterious links.

Since it's shot up by such a huge amount in such a short amount of time, my best guess is it's some kind of sitewide link, but over 10000 seems a little excessive. The other guess is it is negative SEO, but I find it difficult to believe this site would be targeted when it is quite new and not ranking on the first or second pages for any good keywords.

Has anyone experienced something similar, or have a better idea of what's going on here?

that's not what I asked. I can't check backlinks for reasons stated so I need to know if it is an unusual sign to have so many links appearing in WMT

Is your site ranking well? If it's not there is no reason for someone to do any kind of negative seo.

How old is your website? I figure with 50 ish links it shouldn't be too old. If that's the case there is not much you could do (disavow won't help you much). Wait until they show up in GWT and see where they come from.

My guess is your about to get an algo penalty. If that's the case I would de-index the site and start all over again with a new (aged) domain

This site isn't ranking very well, I've done some linkbuilding but search traffic is basically 0, so like you I thought it would be unlikely that someone has tried negative SEO.

Out of interest, what makes you think there's going to be an algo penalty, if it isn't negative SEO?

I assume that you site is quite new. Having 10k links coming in in a day will most likely get your site sandboxed. If that's the case, rather start over than wait it out

Well, I just took a closer look in WMT and it says for the 10000+ links to my homepage URL there are only 20 source domains, most of which are accounted for, so I assume it is one site with something strange going on... Anyone heard of a domain that can produce so many links, maybe it is a social network? Either way I'm hoping Google doesn't consider so many links from a single domain as a reason for sandboxing
