roughly when do you show up on google for your keyword? How many articles, backlinks etc do you need to be somewhere in the first 10 pages for your chosen keyword. Because my site is nowhere yet.

I've recently started this journey. I've bought my domain and hosting and have about 20 articles up at the moment, it's been hard for me upto now as I have no prior experience of website building or SEO. Since starting 20 days ago I have made...0.01$ but I am staying patiant at the moment. I plan on doing my website and getting all content on it first then I will start with the Web2.0s, I plan on having around 5 of these and hopefully in the end I want to earn about $400 a month I will be happy with that lol. Thanks Bluematter on the thread as without it I doubt I would of took any action or even known about making money using Adsense.

Hey guys fantastic thread! I have started my own for a while and currently I'm still reading this (on my phone) and at page 19 of 31.

I hope this hasn't been asked yet but I was curious how much adsense payed to content publishers (ie: US!) and from what I read it's 68% of revenue for the ad?! is that true? so if there was a crazy niche where people were paying 10.00 per click would we really recieve 6.80? almost seems to good to be true. Im not sure if I can post links yet I found that here

I found a fantastic post on this site on OVERoptimization especially with stock wordpress themes, talking about how tag clouds, article titles, related posts, meta text, SEO plugins, links, etc will basically stuff so many keywords in your article/page that it puts you over the cap and google punishes you (HARD)

You can't just scan an article for x% of keywords you need to scan the entire page, everything from links to menus, breadcrumbs, titles, meta text, alt text, etc. All that IN TOTAL should be 3, MAYBE 4%. Try that, remove all tag clouds, related posts and interlink related articles by hand. Viewers should browse your site simply through your interlinking and maybe a menu, but 99% should find an article on google (top 100) and then bounce around your site through your relevant interlinks.

Give that a serious try, you have invested alot so far and I'd hate to see you fail over something so trivial as overoptimization punishment by google. Review everything by hand, every single page, count keywords, every single instance of keyword on website. Bring them down to 2.5% --TOTAL--

Give it time hopefully google reindexes your site and boosts your rating in time. A well written blog should rank with interlinking alone and quality content with no backlinking at all. You won't be top 10 but your articles will at least rank top 100. Overoptimize you won't even be on the first 100 pages though, that is what i imagine is happening.

Thanks I will check the exact % and make it below 3% on each page. I have removed all the meta titles/ meta descriptions and other SEO plugin related stuff. Will keep you all updated.

    update:

I have manually gone over every page and made sure that the key words targeted were below or equal to 3%. In most cases I met the mark, but in some articles the keyword densitey was like 1% so for those ones I used the SEO meta settings to bring the count up to 3%. Although I saw a video from google stating that keyword density is not as important as the content sounding natural and original (makes me wonder if I should focus somewhere else). Anyway, I've made sure each article reads well, outbound links are well distributed and relevant.

I have 19 articles, now around 600 words each. I've taken my site off webmasters while I've been doing this. My aim is to get 25 good articles before I even go live again. One thing I forgot to mention was that in my previous theme I had used more ads above the fold. I had a skyscraper on the right. A banner on the very top and a large rectangle in the upper fold. as well as a link unit right below the nav bar. I might have been penalised for that. Since then I have changed my theme to a pro blogger theme. And reduced ads to two. One on the side and one on top.

Will see how these changes affect my results. If it still doesn't work in a few weeks. I will consider handing it over to a pro to get a review.

I hope it works for you. I'm nearing the end of this thread and realizing bluematter is essentially finished here. Sad to see such an epic thread come to an end but it was an inspiration to so many people and hopefully got lots of people started on the right foot. Thanks bluematter!

And best of luck to everyone. Lets keep our own journeys going, just because bluematter hit his goal doesn't mean it's time for us to quit. Many of us still need to get started.

    Is it really that hard?

    - find niche
    - keyword research (repeat both until you find the perfect topic)
    - get web hosting/domain
    - write content, monetize with adsense
    - rank longtails
    - interlink posts so even though someone landed on a longtail article, they still bounce to a page that would be MUCH harder to rank on google (ie: bounce someone from "best 1973 ford mustang color" longtail to "best new cars" article that you'd have no hope of ever ranking page 1 on google for)

    In the words of JOURNEY

    "DONT STOPPPPPP .... BELIEVEEEEEEEEE IN"
