Ive got a 500GB Western Digital External HD and it is SHIT. After the first month of having it I didn't really use it that much and thought it was pretty good. The second I put more than 100GB on it I reckon it could be my new alarm clock. It is so fucking noisy, constant high pitched whirring sound. I sent it back thinking that there was a problem with it, got it back, was told nothing was wrong with it, filled it back up and the sound has come back again.

my external WD Portable usb 2.0 clicks like crazy sometimes.

I would hope this wouldnt have a laptop harddrive in it. like that.

Also, I lost all my data on mine one time, just turned it off and back on again and had to spend a whole day while software got it back for me, it simply deleted the partition!

Personally I would recommend spending your money on a decent branded product.

I'd better buy two 500 than one 1 gig.
i recently lost one 500 gig .. but i had a second one with most stuff backed up
so much data on one device can also have its downsides

i almost ordered one, but thot better of it. i've heard bad things about wd drives,
plus it's not a good idea to store that much info in one place. 1 tb is mucho data to
lose.

also, if there's a prob with the hdd you must ship it to cali!

i can get a 1 tb drive from staples for around $200. if there is a problem with the unit, i can
carry it to the store for a same-day refund.

I used to work for Best Buy. Western Digital is crap. We had more prob's with them vs. Maxtor or Seagate.

Look at my link above-- that's a WD drive that has over 1000 reviews-- 82% are 5 star reviews. Only 10% are 1-3 stars. That's great to see on Newegg....

That's because people usually review a product within the first few days of getting it. I used the SeaGate recovery system to recover the files from my WD HD as they offered me no support whatsoever and it took a full day to recover the files and then my PC crashed before I saved the log and had to start over :(

I have a WD MyBook 320gig external drive for the past 1+ years and it has worked perfect for me. I guess it is like anything else, there will always be some bad cookies...

Personally, I thought WD is better then Seagate.

Anyway, I guess it is buyer beware, I bought it as a cheap backup to my 500 Gig Iomega which has served me faithfully for the past 2+ years.

Externals are crap.. Get a VelociRaptor or Seagate.. Shadow your drives with other HD's and you should never have a problem..

It more of a toss of the dice in terms of how long your HD will last.. Fact is though, external drives suck compared to internals.

Isn't an external HD the same as an Internal HD except it's enclosure is outside the Computer frame?

i just bought a WD 320GB external drive a month ago and it's already dead. gotta send that shit back.

It's more of a problem with the drives interface rather than the drive itself.. There is also no cooling involved when it comes to an external drive.. The interface is the bigger issue. Not to mention problems with the dc adapters.

i've got a hp external hdd and it has a fan.

about a year ago, maxtor had a major problem with their 300gb drives.
seems they were being installed with the motherboards upside down.
guy at the comp. store told me they had many returns on that model.

even good brands can give you problems if the people on the assembly
line are idiots. :D
