Let this be a lesson to newbies...as a newb myself, I learned this the hard way.

When doing my KW research I found a very nice little KW for a MNS that got 4400 exact searches a month. I put up the site and with little effort I got to #4, then after a tiny bit of work got to 2 and then 1. In the US.

I think I'm doing well, then I realize I'm getting zero traffic. Literally. Zero.

Im thinking WTF obviously, so I check the KW again in the KW tool (I used Market Sam to find this)...and I see the 4400. Then I check google trends to see if it was just out of trend now...

I see that fucking NO one searches for this in the US. It's all in south africa, etc.

I check the adwords KW tool and sure fucking enough, local searches? 16. Son of a whore.

I go on google SA and I dont even see me ...and I don't know how to even track my ranking in that one.

Any ideas on how to proceed? Any tips appreciated. Lesson learned.

Ouch! I always verify search stats through adwords before I jump in...just take it as a lesson learned and don't make that mistake again.

Remember to filter location to United States when doing keyword research in KW Tool.

    I've been through this too!

If you want to check your rankings on SA Google, you can try using RankTracker. They have SA in their list of search engines. Even if you cannot get the cracked versions working, the free version will allow you to check your rankings.

It's ok, we've all made mistakes like that before :) That's why i have like ~15 domains I registered when I was a bit too hasty that either I didn't have exact ticked or i didn't look at local!

Yeah those local searches will get you every time if you don't pay attention. As for ranking in SA, hopefully some of the more experienced members will chime in with some helpful tips...these guys are really good here just from my readings I do daily.

That sucks man, even if you do everything right, you can hit blank keywords like that that have no traffic, despite google keyword tool etc

Well, at least you got somewhere. Take the momentum and go for the U.S. market.

If you want to rank in Google SA get links from south african sites, host your site in SA or get a .co.za domain... If traffic from south africa is what you want of course...

On Market Samurai, create a new project, choose Region as South Africa.

You need to verify wfew things before move forward.
    1. Check with adword keyword tool with exact match
    2. Check ads in google.com to ensure cpc is high
    3. Check google trends to ensure it is not a seasonal keyword

LOL...yep...5 hits a month, around 2 bucks an AS click, 5% CTR. I might pay for the domain in a year. :D

And thanks for the tips on ranking in SA guys...i might just chalk it up to a learning experience.

I had about the same mistake, I made a post about it.

made a site and all, but before I started ranking it, i double checked and turned out the KW was on broad = 12000. exact match = 0. :-D

a couple of members here gave some good tips, but i think talking to a local in SA would be best. i'd try the guy above me.

Keep us updated how it goes for you!
