My current site for my offline business is #1 in the serps for a bunch of keywords which I am thrilled about, business has been picking up. When I created the homepage I did it more for SEO purposes and feel that it should be re done into something better, as in I should be converting more of the people that come to my site into customers. What are the chances that if I change my homepage that my ranking will drop? I dont care if it dances a bit. Any recommendations? I was also thinking of changing the description into something better as well.

Do you mean the content or the design? If the design of the site, then you should be fine.

If you change the content, ensure the on page seo is on point, but I wouldn't imagine too many problems unless your content is totally unrelated which it shouldn't be.

You should be fine as long as you add quality content, make sure not to reduce the word count and be sure to keep all meta data tight. Maybe look into some LSI content as well. If you want to tailor the content very specific, just order a nice 1'000 word LSI content article for the keyword you are ranking for.

The LSI guys give you your work back with the LSI words highlighted, then you can just rewrite the article around the LSI words to match up beautifully with the sales pitch you are trying to put out their. Or just post it if it's good enough as is.

That should help you stick in your spot AND draw in more long-tail traffic. :)

Here's what I do when this happens. I rewrite the content like mentioned above but I try not to change the meta and title too much.

I take the top half of the page and try to turn that into the landing part of my page with a little bit of content, images, headline, maybe an email form, etc. I then put my content a bit lower down on the page. As long as they're not ads at the top of the page it shouldn't be a problem with the content being below the fold.
