1 and 1 hosting is offering 4.99 dot coms plus free whois, but I read a few old reviews from 2007 and the posters said they had problems transferring and the registration took 24 hrs. One guy lost out on his name because they took so long to complete the registration.

These are old reviews, so maybe their services improved.

Even though they are up there on the list of companies that have the most servers, and they are widely known, their service still sucks, as well as their support.

When I hosted with them, my site crashed constantly. It couldn't support a lot of the wordpress plugins I tried to install either. Bluehost was giving away 3.95/m hosting today. Much better package than 1and1. Free who is, unlimited domains, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited space. I recommend them.

You have to send them notice that you do not wish to renew, before a domain expires, or they will automatically sign you up for another year, try to charge the card you used originally for the the highest renew rate they have without your authorization. Then, they send it to an annoying collection agency that calls you 3 times a day.

They locked my domains after I cancelled my hosting. No way to transfer them thru the admin panel. Pisses me off.

Their support will make you want to gouge your eyes out, and go on a murderous rampage. No joke. Some of the most frustrating techs I have dealt with... and their administrative "processes" for people who wish to cancel, or transfer sites or domains are ridiculous...

When I have a client who wants me to work with 1and1, (usually to get them away from there) I either charge extra because I know what a PITA it's going to be, or I refuse to do it flat out, and tell them to have their new host help them.

But then, I am spoiled by HG, so...

I bought my very first domain there when they had a sale.

I'm still new in IM, but I've now purchased domains elsewhere, and I had my worst experience with 1and1. Even if it's a good deal, I suggest purchasing elsewhere. Just my opinion :)
