Two years ago with my friends, we started a video game studio.

    Project details
    • We finished the final beta test and will release the game in a week at the Devcom, Germany
    • It's a multiplayer real-time strategic mobile game developed on unity by a team of 10 people
    • We plan to monetize it with in-game items (90%) / ads video reward (10%)

    Long term goals
    • Hiring more people
    • Achieve at least 50M downloads in 2 years
    • Banking hard, starting to developpe news games

The next 3 months will be about
    • Building a community
    • Launching the game in China
    • Managing multiple micro-events like Twitch tournament
    • ASO and advertising, mostly in-game video ads and split testing optimization

It will be a classic journey thread AMA/Report

    • Thanks Thanks x 20

    I guess it's 1.5M app download?!

    Good luck!

Just my little advice about your project to "Launching the game in China"

If you don't have in your team someone who can understand everything in chinese, hire a company dedicated in the mobile game to launch your game in chinese stores. To publish a game in the chinese store, you need to handle many things (like the Chinese Gouvernment have to allow your app to be published, which stores to select because there are dozens of stores ....).

We tried to do that by our own, but we spend too many energy and money. If we have to do it again, we'll directly hire a company that can handle all the Chinese part

    Thanks!

For now, the advertising budget is around $150k - $200k which is ridiculously low for our target and development expense.
We choose to increase the quality of the game and add plenty of content, a solo campaign and a lot of stuff so basically, we burn the ads budget on 10 months of salaries.

Today we have some good proposal, a guy propose us to take 10% for $500k but we are waiting for the dev event at Germany the next week since we will see many more investors and potentially a better offer.

The good ratio for budget DEV/ADS is generally 50/50 or even more on ads.

$1,5M is the dev cost on salaries, office rent, tax...

I will not give the name since self promote isn't allowed and the game concept pretty unique.

    Thanks!

Yes, China is complicated and it seems there is a lot of money to make with them.
Two of my associates lived in china for 10 years and one of them is totally bilingue but still, we will hire a company to do it and see if we did it ourself for the next game.

We still need to open a company in China to be able to receive payment from their different stores.

For now, we have around 1k downloads since it's was a closed beta test, only a few streamers and gamers of their community heard about the game.

Gamedev is very stiff business. 25 game releases per day on Steam in 2018 (9,300 games released in 2018 totally). Seems you didn't release it yet. Good luck.

You have a nice backup to launch what I am sure will be a success.
Great you want to share it with us.

Yesterday we had amazing feedback, especially about graphic and the richness of content.
Some promising business discussion and good networking with other game studios.
I hope to see many articles talking about the game in the following days since 350+ journalist are there.

    Thanks!

Hehe probably yes! Did you go as an exhibitor or visitors? Honestly I did not have time to chill and see the city but it did look pretty good.

    Thanks! I'm not from Germany

I hope this journey will be profitable for you

I'm not sure if I will ever give the name of the game, if I do it will be once the game is well started

    You are welcome

    About the Devcon/Gamescom:
Going to the Devcon as an exhibitor can be necessary but was not what I expected, the 350+ journalists announced was more like 20.
It's always good to have feedback and exchange with others in the industry but that was not crazy neither.

If you are looking for financing, pre/seed, soft launch, publisher and so on directly take a business pass for the Gamescom, you will see all the major actors.

    What next:
After long discussions with some leaders of the industry, it appears that our game as a lot of chances to become a small authority in the Esport scene.
There is still a lot of improvements to make this possible, meaning we need more money than expected, a lot more, about $xM in total.

So we change the whole financial strategy. In negotiation with a few publishers, we are now harvesting
data and metrics to get the best deal possible.
Even with good metrics, it will probably end by giving them 30%-50% of the whole benefice for 4-6 years, meaning the whole lifespan of the game.

About the game itself, we improve the rewards system, timeline/calendar and similar like daily quest to increase the retention rate (the #1 metric a publisher will look).

For the questions asked by email:
I still don't know why not posting here? Maybe some lurkers who don't have a BHW account.

No, I don't invest the whole $1,5M myself, and not I didn't win the lottery.
In fact, I sold the site I made on this journey for a good amount and I reinvested in a few projects, massively into this one.

If it interests people I'll go into more details about financing, for sure no need to be a millionaire to launch your game. A game studio can be financed, of course, you need a very solid project for that.
