Facebook Ads Newsletter #4 -

A free newsletter that demystifies the hidden models, incentives and consequences of the most significant events across the Facebook ads industry

__________________________________

It’s been a rough start to the year for Facebook. First, the iOS 14 update is threatening to limit how much data advertisers can collect. And now most recently, Facebook experienced a massive ads outage last weekend.

This all begs the question: is Facebook still the best place to spend your advertising dollars? I may be biased since I make my living on the platform, but I still believe it is.

Every company, no matter how successful it is, will face its fair share of challenges. These are just the latest of many issues Facebook has overcome. And despite all the adversity they’ve encountered in the past they still continued their success.

I have no doubt that by the end of the year the platform will have moved past these obstacles and they’ll continue to grow their advertising business well into the future.

With that out of the way, this week we’ll be discussing Facebook’s campaign to promote the benefits of personalized ads, the ad outage that occurred last weekend, and how Amazon rainforest plots are being sold illegally on Facebook.

Facebook Promotes the Benefits of Personalized Ads to Combat Apple

You knew Facebook wasn’t going to go down without a fight. This past week the company launched its “Good Ideas Deserve to Be Found” campaign. It will include TV, radio, and digital advertising and will focus on how personalized ads have helped many small local businesses grow.

Of course, the kinds of personalized ads that are being discussed here are exactly the types of ads that Apple’s new update will prevent. While Facebook isn’t overtly saying the campaign is in response to the iOS 14 update, it’s pretty clear it’s their way of opposing the changes.

The company is launching the hashtag #DeserveToBeFound, which will allow small businesses to share their offerings across Facebook and Instagram.

In addition to the campaign, Facebook has also accused Apple of anti-competitive behaviour, related to how it’s using its control of the App Store to limit how much data app developers can access.

Here at 0 Penny, we see both sides of the debate. Obviously, as Facebook marketers, we want access to as much data as we can get, as this allows us to deliver better results for our clients. However, we also understand that people have concerns about privacy.

In the end, while the campaign is clearly a strike against Apple, it does raise awareness about the importance of digital advertising for small businesses. Especially during a time when many businesses are struggling.

Facebook Ads give businesses access to a powerful advertising tool at an affordable price. So companies should definitely think twice about doing anything that will limit access to it. Otherwise, it could prevent many small businesses from reaching their full potential.

Facebook Ad Outage

If you were wondering why you saw a massive drop in your Facebook Ads traffic last weekend, you weren’t alone. The platform experienced a major disruption in ad their delivery that lasted from February 18 - 22.

It appears that the only campaigns left unaffected by the outage were Instagram Story campaigns.

So what happened? We’re still not entirely sure. Here’s the statement from Facebook to MarketingLand:

“We’re still investigating this issue and will take any learnings to improve our systems going forward.”

However, many are speculating the outage had to do with the new iOS 14 update, which gives users more control over how their data is shared. Facebook denies this is the case, but it does seem odd that the outage occurred right on the heels of the update.

In any case, the outage appears to be resolved now and Facebook Ads are running as usual again (or as usual as they can be following the update).

I’ll be sure to let you know of any other issues or problems that arise that might be due to the new iOS update.

Amazon Rain Forest Plots Are Being Sold on Facebook Marketplace

Fabricio pointing at a tree in the forestImage credits: BBC.com

Have you ever wanted to buy a part of the Amazon rain forest? Well, don’t be fooled by the land currently being sold on Facebook.

Recently, plots of land located in the Amazon rainforest (some as large as several football fields) have started appearing on Facebook Marketplace. Unfortunately, this land is being sold illegally without the consent of the indigenous peoples that live there.

While Facebook said it’s willing to cooperate with local authorities on the matter, it won’t take any independent steps to bring down the listings.

"Our commerce policies require buyers and sellers to comply with laws and regulations," the company said. However, it appears they’re leaving it up to local authorities to ensure those laws are enforced.

Unfortunately, as of now, the country’s government appears to be unwilling to stop these sales.

Sellers are illegally clearing land to increase its value, which is also contributing to Brazil’s deforestation problem.

A number of sellers even admit they don’t actually have a title to the land, but that doesn’t appear to be stopping sellers from purchasing it. Much of the land is being bought and used by cattle ranchers.

Hopefully, a resolution to this problem can be found soon. While the internet opens many doors for honest hardworking people, it also provides opportunities for criminals. It’s a shame to see the land people call home destroyed just so others can make money.

Well, that’s all the news I have for you this week. As always, I’ll continue to be on the lookout for any information that’s are worth sharing.

And if you have questions about any of the topics covered in this newsletter don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Enjoy your week and I’ll catch up with you again soon!

Hey!

Please send me your email or the channel we were communicating on. I'll look into this
My email is [email protected]

My Skype is live:.cid.67af578547b8e526

I previously worked with you for my first ever online store 3 years ago and was happy with the results. But recently when I tried to work with you, nothing was done on the account.

I have amazing content, a great offer and a funnel that I am looking to drive traffic to. I am confident we can achieve scale if the work is done properly.

I'm regretting signing up to this. A complete waste of money. (Partly through my own naivety). I've purchased many services on BHW & this is the one that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I ordered this on 19th February, and work still hadn't began at the beginning of the 10th March. When ordering, the initial infographic mentioned to check out a refund policy, which I always do when ordering online good and services. This was offline.,
However, I saw the terms which were also mentioned in the initial post, which it turns out only covers the Starter Packages anyway.

I'm unsure why higher priced packages aren't accepted, but that's probably a question for another day.

The first hiccup arrived during February when I was advised their Business Manager was restricted. I waited a further 6 days, but then didn't get any response.

I requested an update on the creatives, which I received on the 10th March. These creatives were simply copied from the Merchant site itself, although I was led to believe I was waiting for a design team to come up with something.

I didn't receive anything, the ads were not live for a single minute & yet I've been advised that I cannot claim a refund. I was advised that I can only claim a refund within 24hrs, although this doesn't exist anywhere in the terms.

Attached files are;
1) the refund policy not being online at the time of order. Since communicating with Prakhar, this has come back online (you could suggest conveniently?)
2) Terms 3 and 6 which mention refunds, however it mentions that refunds aren't possible after the Ad has began. I simply only got to the stage where I viewed creatives, which would have been rejected anyway.

I have stopped communicating for now with Prakhar, as this matter has been escalated with my banking team.

We've done multiple campaigns. I will be posting a case study.

Hey!

You requested a refund because your account got disabled.

We have clearly mentioned in our policy that we cannot refund if the account gets disabled.

1615390606949.png

Refund policy is available on the thread.

A refund is not provided in case of your account getting disabled.

1615390885986.png

We prepared the ads and showed it to you. We welcome all feedback to update the ads. However, clearly it was not the reason.

How would you like it if you did the work, paid your team and then the client says they want a refund, with no fault of theirs.

We've refunded many people in the past. However, when it's clearly not our fault, I will stand by my team.

Thanks

My first account was disabled after your business manager was invited onto the ad account, so you actually got that one banned.

I have one alternative ad account which I will not be sharing with you, due to the initial issues. This is in good condition and I don't want you to get involved and ruin the health.

Your policy states refunds can't be claimed after the ads have been running. It's been 20 days+ and my ads haven't been running.

The creatives that you made / right clicked and press save image from the original vendor, were quite obvious copies and you provided these only when I mentioned refund.

You're asking how I would like it if you've paid staff and claiming a refund... But in this instance your team have plagiarised creatives and not actually done any work?

You need to clear up the refund process for further customers. Is it 24hours, is it after the ads are live and do they only apply to the standard package? I purchased a premium package which doesn't appear to be under the refund policy.

That's quite laughable, but I won't say anymore on this. Thankfully I paid with my business account via stripe and the charge back is in progress

Sure that's a false claim!

The account in question is completely different to the one that we are discussing in that screenshot. But it's great to see you picking and choosing screenshots.

It took 8 days to receive creative, of which you've stated that you found these in a marketing pack.

You've confirmed you haven't ran any ads, and you didn't make the creative...

Any answer to my previous post, instead of just coming out with claims that I'm lying please?

Any answer to my previous post, instead of just coming out with claims that I'm lying please?
Sure. Here it is:

I ordered this on 19th February, and work still hadn't began at the beginning of the 10th March.
Your ETA was March 1 as stated in the 1st message. Works begin within 24 hours. However, there's no evident activity on the account as everything happens offline.

Both the pieces of information was conveyed to you in the 1st message.

Our Business Manager was restricted on 28th February. And we informed you about the same on the very next working day i.e. March 1

Such restrictions are very common with accounts in both good & bad standing as these are automated. Usually, FB restores the account after an appeal.

We have successfully restored our and our client's accounts numerous times in our 7 years of service.

We informed you about the same and our inability to upload the ads as a result. Your messages conveyed that you were fine with the process.

The first hiccup arrived during February when I was advised their Business Manager was restricted. I waited a further 6 days, but then didn't get any response.
Since we were still waiting to hear from Facebook, there was no further correspondence as stated earlier on Skype.

However, we did respond to your message regularly, well within our stipulated revert time.

When ordering, the initial infographic mentioned to check out a refund policy, which I always do when ordering online good and services. This was offline.,
1) the refund policy not being online at the time of order. Since communicating with Prakhar, this has come back online (you could suggest conveniently?)
The link in the OP may not be working as we were in touch with BHW Support staff to update our thread for the last 2 months. It has been updated now.

And finally, the thread was updated on Feb 24th. 5 days after you ordered.

We have been posting links to our policy in the thread anyways or when someone asks for it. We cannot update the OP as that is controlled by the moderators.

All you had to do was ask us or search the thread.

You never asked for the policy before payment or after payment. Only after you wanted a refund.

3.

However, I saw the terms which were also mentioned in the initial post, which it turns out only covers the Starter Packages anyway.
I’m unsure why higher priced packages aren't accepted
No, sir. The policy covers all packages. Starter package is separately mentioned as it’s different from other packages being a setup only package.

The policy in its entirety is focussed on the Advanced & Ultimate.

Here's an example from the policy. #7 mentions Scaling fees. However, there cannot be any scaling fee for the Starter Package as we don't manage ads in that package. It's clearly for the higher packages.

I requested an update on the creatives, which I received on the 10th March. These creatives were simply copied from the Merchant site itself, although I was led to believe I was waiting for a design team to come up with something.
  1. These creatives were simply copied from the Merchant site itself, although I was led to believe I was waiting for a design team to come up with something.
The creatives that you made / right clicked and press save image from the original vendor, were quite obvious copies and you provided these only when I mentioned refund.
It took 8 days to receive creative, of which you've stated that you found these in a marketing pack.

When your BM’s are restricted you can’t create any ads. If we can’t create ads, we can’t show you previews. It’s this simple. As soon as our BM was renewed, we showed you the ads.

The creatives were taken from the URL that you shared with us.

In order to maintain congruency (which helps with conversions), we used images from your website & affiliate.

That said, we used a video that was created from scratch as well.

Again, the creatives were shown to you for approval. We always make changes as and when requested. These are of course not the final form if you don’t approve of them.

Multiple variations are added in the next 4 weeks of the service period as well.

You're asking how I would like it if you've paid staff and claiming a refund... But in this instance your team have plagiarised creatives and not actually done any work?
We asked you for graphic assets in our onboarding questionnaire. In that, you gave us similar assets as we used in the creatives.

Apart from that, we were given just a URL from your end.

We went beyond our call of duty in our research process to visit your vendor and download the media pack that vendors offer affiliates.

  1. I didn't receive anything, the ads were not live for a single minute & yet I've been advised that I cannot claim a refund.
You were updated regularly on the status and you cooperated throughout. If you wanted a refund or weren’t happy, you could have asked us anytime from when you paid, to when our BM was restricted. But you didn’t.

Only when your account was disabled. You asked. For a refund.

This is very evident. And I am confident the BHW members understand this very well

I was advised that I can only claim a refund within 24hrs, although this doesn't exist anywhere in the terms.

It does & very clearly:

Terms 3 and 6 which mention refunds, however it mentions that refunds aren't possible after the Ad has began. I simply only got to the stage where I viewed creatives, which would have been rejected anyway.

You clearly requested a refund because your account was disabled. You didn’t ask for a refund when our BM was restricted. If you did, I would have refunded because as per our terms, the fault was from our end.

But YOUR account getting disabled is not our fault. In fact, our BM’s get restricted because of ad accounts that we work on. Not vice-versa.
We’ve been here 7 years, with the same FB account. If our accounts got the client account’s disabled. We’d have been out of business long ago.

Our account quality puts many of the top BHW providers to shame in their longevity & spending prowess.

My first account was disabled after your business manager was invited onto the ad account, so you actually got that one banned.

You had troubles with your account even before you gave us access.

Even after we got our new BM, your 'fresh' account was disabled before access was approved.

This is our new BM and so far we’ve requested access to the following accounts.

None have been disabled.

You need to clear up the refund process for further customers. Is it 24hours, is it after the ads are live and do they only apply to the standard package? I purchased a premium package which doesn't appear to be under the refund policy.

The refund process & policy is very clear. BHW staff & moderators don’t allow sellers to list their thread without a clear Refund Policy.

I had to go to-and-fro with their staff 3 times just so that my policy was clear enough for them.

The full policy is mentioned here, in the OP & multiple times on the thread. A simple forum search or a message to any one of us would have solved your issue.

Thanks

CASE STUDY
How a Strong Campaign and Effective Website Led to a 260-373% Return on Spend
About the Client

The client is an art dealer. They sell fine art prints through their website.

The Problem

The client had used Facebook ads in the past that were most successful. However, the cost per purchase was £22.78, which was too high to make a profit. They also had a small budget to work with.

The Goal

We set out to try and deliver sales at a lower cost per purchase. We also wanted to deliver on our estimated RoAS of 180% - 660%.

The Solution

We decided to start by building off the previous creative the client had used. While the cost per purchase ended up being too high, these ads did generate sales. So, something about these ads was resonating with the client’s customers. We just had to refine them to make them more profitable.

The client had limited funds to work with, so we started with a small budget of £15 per day.

As with all of our campaigns, we let the first batch of creatives run for a while to allow us to gauge what was working and what wasn’t. Once we had enough impressions we analyzed the data and started making changes to optimize the campaign.

What helped was all the things the client got right. Their store had a nice clean layout, excellent product descriptions, clear shipping information, multiple payment options, and a smooth checkout system. Their products were also priced affordably and they offered fast shipping, which led to a lot of great reviews.

All of this, combined with the Facebook campaign, resulted in a high number of conversions. But there were other contributing factors as well.

The home decor niche as a whole has jumped in popularity since the start of the pandemic.

Since people are spending more time at home they’re looking for various ways to decorate their house. So items like art are currently in high demand.

NFT (non-fungible token) blockchain technology is also making buying and selling digital art easier than ever, so that’s helping the popularity of this niche as well.

The Results

In the end, we were able to deliver on our promises. Here are some of the stats from the campaign:

  • $3,000 in total revenue
  • 40+ reported sales
  • 147K+ total impressions
  • 263% RoAS (lifetime)
  • 373% top ad set RoAS
  • $1000+ in spend

Video with Results - https://www.loom.com/share/9d90bf5ccbd047f7bf174464e095cbea

While the work we did on the Facebook campaign definitely contributed to these results, a lot of credit needs to go to the client. Having a website as effective as their’s makes running a campaign so much easier. You can have great ad creative, but if you’re sending customers to a poor website you won’t get any sales.

So, my advice would be to optimize your website first before investing in Facebook ads. If you’re going to be spending money on advertising you want to make sure every component is working right. While it might be tempting to jump into ads right away it’s worth waiting until your site is ready.

We offer no-obligation consultations where we offer our insights on whether the website is primed for running ads or not. You can reach out to us using the channels below.

Products Used

The client purchased our Advanced Lite package, which included campaign set-up, multiple ad variations, ad monitoring, optimization, and more.

WE ARE NOW A SINGAPORE-REGISTERED COMPANY & WE WANT TO CELEBRATE!

Moving on from our previous country of Incorporation - India to Singapore is going to help us in many ways.

One of them is the lower amount of taxes (7% of spend) Facebook will apply to every penny we spent compared to 18% we were previously charged in India.

Also, with Bitcoin, we save a lot on fees vs our current payment provider which charges us almost 6%.

Due to all of these savings in costs, we are happy to pass it on to you, the lovely BHW user.

Our fee remains the same - a nominal 10% of spend.

This allows us to give you access to high-quality accounts with unlimited replacement options. Plus, high-quality visual reporting.

As always, our accounts are offered only with our Ad Management services.

For questions, you can get in touch with me or request a quote for your campaign.

How Facebook Ads Can Help Artist Grow on Spotify

We recently ran a Facebook ads campaign for an artist on Spotify and I wanted to share what I learned to help other artists find success on the platform.

About Spotify

Spotify was founded in 2006 by a Swedish entrepreneur named Daniel Ek. It was a response to the changing music industry that saw more people going online to find the music they loved, rather than buying a CD.

Napster and other illegal music downloading services were seen as threats to the music industry, but Ek saw the new technology as an opportunity. He developed a platform that let people legally stream and download their favourite music, and allowed artists to get paid for it.

Today, Spotify generates billions of dollars a year in revenue. Their popularity has even forced industry giants like Apple to change their business model and mimic Spotify’s strategy.

Spotify for Artists

There are a number of reasons artists should consider getting on Spotify. Here are a few of the key benefits:

  • Increased Exposure: It gives people another avenue to discover your music. If you end up on a curated playlist you could reach thousands or even millions of new fans.
  • They Cultivate New Artists: Spotify collects data on all its listeners. If they find that you’re music is starting to trend they’ll promote you to more listeners, which helps your popularity grow.
  • Promote Your Concerts: Spotify will let your listeners know when you’re performing near them, which boosts your ticket sales.

While Spotify does a good job promoting your music, when you can combine that with a strong social media presence you really have a recipe for success. Due to current events, more people are turning to social media for entertainment. So it’s critical to be on those platforms to promote your music on Spotify.

Facebook Ads for Spotify

Facebook ads are one of the best ways to spread the word about your music. Since Facebook keeps so much data on their users you can target your ads to your ideal listeners. For example, if your music is similar to another artist you can target their fans to help them discover your music.

Facebook offers a number of different objectives, including:

  • Traffic to your website or Spotify page.
  • Post engagement.
  • Video views.

You can also use Facebook to drive your Spotify listeners to your other platforms. Through the use of services like Pixel.me you can target people who listen to you on Spotify with Facebook ads. You can then use those ads to help them discover your website and other pages.
