A good seo expert will not need your ftp info in the beginning since he would look at it from s.e. site. If he likes to checkout or edit some pages you could download them yourself and give them to him.

make a file on your server called .htaccess, then if you hit update permalink structure scroll to the bottom of the screen, you will see a code and a mesage that goed "if this file was writeable yadayada". Copy that code, past it in the .htaccess and done.
