The site in question had been used extensively in the US and I was trying to rank in the UK without using any webmaster tools... had to bow to it in the end.

That is possible. Though they have decent metrics, and are clean...

The sites aren't over optimised at all. They all, including the money site, have only direct keyword mentions a couple of times. And as natural as possible inclusion within text and title etc... with variations instead as and when applicable to the site.

haha yeah that is the issue. I've noticed different indexing for google and bing too? No idea what to think, still nothing...

Yep I've done that, and hopefully it will help. They've all got TF of between 10-20 so not massive but not nothing. and have relatively small but clean BLP, 70-300 BL. So this might be why it taken a while for traction, but this long still doesn't seem right for any traction at all...

The website itself isnt new, but hasnt been used much over the years, and doesnt really have a backlink profile. I think this is the reason it is taking a while, or I hope anyway!

Yeah that is my feeling, hence being worried about having to start with new tier 1. Yeah I also thought that, so I checked the cache previously and links were there. update: on rechecking, seems the site that gets the most referral and direct traffic from tier 2 isnt getting indexed properly...

I think poeple are still using PBNs successful in 2015. Might not be as affective, but should still be enough to get into the top 50...?
