Unfortunately, if you're in a competitive niche where there's money to be made, there's a chance you may get spammed. But if you build some good authority links, your rankings shouldn't budge much.
They're done for both as a few people mentioned above.
Just mention your main money keyword once in the site title (and your h1 tag) and once in the image alt-tag.
Then sprinkle keyword related anchors within your article.

I use a few web 2.0's and comment links on authority sites just to vary out my anchors (e.g to build brand and generic anchors).
Then I hit the site during month 2 with PBN links with keyword-related anchors.
I don't build any links to my PBNs since I've invested a ton of money into it.
I stopped buying .co.uk domains for PBNs because they're too much headache to handle. I've been having whois privacy problems and other issues with them.
You need to optimize your page first... just include your keyword somewhere in the title.
You then need to send good PR links with keyword-related anchors to your site.
Amazon pages are pretty easy to rank.

What most people do is just build links for the first month and then expect that to be the end-all.
