I'm surprised by the number of people dismissing these links. A contextual link from forbes survives any update and is as bulletproof for your business and SEO as it gets. I wouldn't be surprised if large corporations paid tens of thousands in schmoozing for high authority press.
That's a great question. I expect this to change more with further algo updates. I believe Google is moving toward relevance as a primary factor in juice.

PBN's have to adapt. But it's a battle Google can't win. If SEO's needed to buy brick and mortar stores to verify their 'domains' someone would do it. PBN's are in for the long haul. But yes, everything you mentioned should be obvious to any SEO.
