Check how any internal links are pointing to those specific pages, you would sometimes be amazed to see 1000s all with high page authority.

Ahrefs would pick up links quickly and report the majority of them. Next would be majestic, open site explorer is lazy and does not report spammy links.

For bing and yahoo, all sorts of links still work, but for google, its always back and forth.

Good quality directories that could potentially drive direct traffic to your websites would be good.

Look for providers of niche related links on authority sites and pages. If its a one off payment thing, it would be better. Get as many of them.

The only reason social sites rank better these days is because of their authority.

Dont waste time chasing pr as its never updated at a regular interval, and it may never be updated again. But usually, you would have to get links from a couple of pr4 pages with real pr to get a pr3.
