As far as the blog content goes, I would say that you shouldn't worry too much about the audience. If you're going for a travel blog, try to consistently create the best travel related content possible on your blog and that in itself will gradually attract visitors.
Another useful tip for improving your forum hits is to look at popular forums and see if there are any similarities between them. Then see if you can try and implement those traits into your own.
