I mostly used new domains for my sites, most of the time it'll take about 6-9 months before getting some traffic (if any at all). So after 12 months they usually make close to $0 so I'd just let the domains expire. The only website that is making money is, of course, the one built on expired...

I've done something similar to this (but require more manual work) but only one site has made some money so far. Now I think I know why other sites failed. One question though: do you register whois protection for these domains?
