Generally, subdomains are treated as separate entities but there are always exceptions to that. With your example, and I assume you mean strawberry.blogspot and ice-cream.blogspot, you may reach a point of diminishing returns especially if the content is closely related.

Since the EMD is just removing the bump, it seems that you are back to straight SEO and content and should be able to recover. I think this is a good opportunity if you have a diverse strategy and havent been focused exclusively on emds.

May as well do subdomains rather than buy a ton of additional domains. Also, if you just silo the content so that you are not plastering one page with anchor text links, then you will probably be OK from an SEO standpoint.
I agree with you that they are important, especially for future-proofing your link profile. But, links and content are still more important and social is pretty useless if it is not directed to quality content. I think a lot of people have an issue with social from a link building standpoint...
Could have been the latest update targeting EMD's. You also did not mention how you varied your anchor text so if you were hammering a few exact match phrases, that could also put you on the radar as well.
