Unfollowing the tumblr staff is a big one for sure. Also, making the blog titles and descriptions unique helps too.

Nice, it can do that. I think it's just Google tossing sites around who aren't big brands who pay them lots for adwords. They are doing their best to kill affiliate sites and it's working. Just look at how much the Alexa traffic has dropped for this site and the other major SEO sites.

Best of luck, I think the days of passing full rank over to the target site and having it stick for the long term are over. Hopefully it will last as long as possible though.

Google always exaggerate the amount of searches there are per month, it's in their best interests to lie as there is more money for them to be made out of it with higher bidding for Adwords and advertisers who will pay more.

Before you give up, try blasting it with social signals off fiverr and wait a week and if nothing happens, clone it to a new site and canonize it.

It could be a dance, try some social signals, retweets, reposts, etc and it could recover in time.

There's another way to do this other than the way mentioned above and it's supposed to stick, but it's a bit complex and I don't fully understand how to do it. It's something I'd like to learn though just to be able to do it.
