Most of the time those pages dont need new content at all just one or two relevant links pointing at them. I have pushed stuck keywords from position 12 to top 5 with a single niche edit when the content was already solid. New pages take months to even get crawled properly, so that makes more sense.

For a quick check I just use ahrefs backlink/checker, top 100 links is usually enough to see whos linking and the general pattern. If I need the full picture for a client site I'll pull it straight from GSC instead since thats the actual data Google has, not a crawlers guess at it.

A lot of people chase metrics. I pay more attention to the relevance and placement you will get better result when you stop looking at the backlink but the page from where the backlink comes because the contextual link inside a relevant article work much better then a random page

Okay, I think a lot of people just focus on the backlinks and forget the page itslef, because I have seen the pages with fewer backlinks ranking better because they are fullfilling the user need, I don't mean that backlinks don't matter but the backlinks alone can't decide the ranking

A lot of SaaS sites jump straight into link building but its much easier to earn quality backlinks when you have something useful to reference like original data, a free tool, or a genuinely helpful resource. The backlink matters but the page youre building links to matters just as much.
