IMO if it's something everyone can do easily/without much effort then it probably won't be as 'high quality'/valuable anymore. After all those links are valuable for a reason.

As long as the meta tags make sense/are relevant to the page they're talking it's fine. It would be better to optimize them more for user experience. I also wouldn't spend too much time to meta tags, there are more ways to get bang for your buck in terms of SEO performance.
