I would say that it is safe, but it depends on how well you edit it. I liken it to a jumping off point for generating content and build it out dramatically.

As others have said, internal link building can help. I've also found that pinging the URL via page speed insights as suggested by @Opulentos does help speed it up.

They have leaned on age for the longest time. I can see their point to an extent; older content has stood the test of time (in general) but there's a lot of old shit out there and because it's on a site that's established, they just assume the content is ok.
