As with nearly everything else in SEO, the answer to your query is 'it depends.' Backlinks are extraordinarily important. So is on page SEO. Is it possible to rank a site for a moderately competitive term without backlinks? Probably not. Low or no competitive term? Sure.
Exactly. Unless the 1M links are part of a network that Google is already aware of it's not going to hurt or help your website, explicitly for this purpose...if you could hurt your own website, long term, then you can surely hurt your competitors' sites as well. I've tested this several times...
I use Stealthwriter.ai on a very low 'humanize' setting. Check the internal AI checker and also tools like the plagiarism checker from SEMRush. All content I create passes most AI tools with minor edits required on AI spun humanized software.
When building backlinks always try to get select domains/pages with a low spam score, however high spam score links are NOT going to hurt your site. If they could then you could just spend the day building very high spam backlinks to your competitor sites.
