They are only for supporting and for saving time.
I use 25 proxies (Squid) for 3 connections.
In my opinion the quality of proxies is also important as the amount of it. Squid delivers Google checked proxies with a good speed.

I would suggest to take 2008 R2 Standard because it need less resources. If you don't need Enterprise Features, Standard is enough.
W7 Ultimate is not so save as a server OS.
It happend to me to. It seems that they attacked the admin account so i suggest to rename it.
The second attack was very strange. Not even cPanel Login worked for me.
If you are not so experienced i suggest to use the robots.txt.

One problem I've seen this weekend is the WP Robot pictures folder which can be found in the source code (search for "robot").
I found a description to change it in the source code, but it seems to be outdated.
As soon as i find a solution I'll post it.
