There are a lot of cases now where the "big guys" have their sites hit by low quality links (penguin related issues), so there's a chance that the "big guy" should be ranking number 1 but they're actually not doing as well as they should because of link issues.

I'm still wondering if the sites that they supposed have 'recovered' from Penguin weren't hit by Penguin, and that's why they were able to get the traffic back.

I have noticed that also--and have stopped submitting to ezine articles. Not worth the time anymore, even if you have an article that's totally unique.
