Just to piggy back on what others have said, it's important to understand how different users interact with the site. For example, visitors from Facebook will respond to your site differently than someone coming from Organic Search or Twitter.

It's also possible to serve more ads through working with Google Partners. There are many that have setup DFP and allow publishers to work through them and apply for Google's Ad Exchange.
I would definitely look into serving ads on the site. As long as you aren't going overboard and spamming people out, I don't see why you couldn't earn a little bit of money through that.
