Go to Services and disable "Windows Update" service. To disable Defender, create a Registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Real-Time Protection" and add a DWORD entry "DisableRealtimeMonitoring" with the value "1".

The best defense is to be wary of everything. And sometimes it's not enough :D There are vulnerabilities that cannot be avoided. I remember a Yahoo vulnerability some years ago, all you had to do was to open an email (without clicking any link etc.).

Are you really recommending those 2 AVS? As you're a computer scientist, do you know that ESET had huge problems few good years with a simple instruction like pminsw xmm0,xmm1? ESET and AVAST aren't hard to bypass, IMHO. But, of course, you're the security specialist.

I cannot tell if it boots faster than 8.1, but the programs are apparently loaded faster. And compatibility wise, I didn't encounter any problem. All the programs I tried worked fine (antivirus, Photoshop, Delphi, Dreamweaver, OpenOffice, compilers etc.).
