My experience has mainly been with joomla. Its damn easy to setup with many extensions but alot of the good ones come at a cost. Wordpress seems easier and plugins and workrounds are generally free that I can see. I am soon to give it a wirl.

In a similar situ. I dont want to goto joomla v3 as have to recreate from scratch all the components and plugins. Not used wordpress much but since, like others I have had to wordround php and access issues, I am giving it a shot.

I can second Vidahost. I have a few sites with them, support is great.
