For myself, I think that you can still do your way without paying ads. However, it takes time to own a page that has some influence. Continue to read the advices that are posted on this forum, some users here are great sources of BH wisdom ;-) This forum provides me almost a great idea per day !

This is what it's all about for me : quality !Beside, I think that google is a tool, don't forget that what is really interresting you is your amount of visitors. So a no-follow link shouldn't be avoided. I usually even don't verify the rel attribute.
