I would think Google would look askance at something re-tweeted 100,000 times on an account that has less than 5-10,000,000 followers, I'm sure there are metrics for re-tweeting relating to number of followers, etc.
OP used a very small number of social signals, considering articles on mainstream high authority (95 domain authority) news sites like The Economist will only have several hundred or a couple thousand FB likes, and less shares, I could see why google algo wouldn't bite on such massive social...
