    Can any .htaccess experts figure this out?

    What it sounds like from the "error 310 too many redirects" is that the old category redirects somewhere, and .htaccess thinks it needs to redirect that to a new place, basically creating a redirect loop. Double check the links and make sure they are pointing to the correct urls.
