I've posted a short in august 23. Almost nothing during 6 months, then it picked up (like nothing crazy, we are talking about 50k) but I don't understood how the algo worked on this one : after the initial push (unsucessful) like all other shorts, I though it was burried 6 feet under. That's what happened for a few month but suddenly it came back on research feed. As you can see the watch time is just average and engagement is 76% I've published soooooo many shorts with way better metrics than this one, and they never reached more than 8k. So I feel like I miss on part of the puzzle, it makes me feel like I completely misunderstand the way the algo works. So if someone already faced something similar, let me know. The only explanation I can find right now is the subject of the short itself: it's talking about autonomous driving, which was maybe a smaller niche in 23 than it was in 24 or 25 ?
Anyway, let me know your thoughts.

YouTube can pick up older Shorts when the topic gets more interest or the video starts showing up in search. Your niche explanation makes sense sometimes timing and audience demand matter as much as the metrics. It’s hard to know the exact reason from the curve alone.

yes, shorts could be boosted weeks or months down the line if youtube decides that it's more suited to some other audience. i have seen old videos resurface without making any significant changes, hence i wouldn't rate performance on just the first few days.

I would say what was applicable when you posted your short is not the same as what is obtainable now. I suspect something. Your short came up in time when Tesla released it's flying car and China is doing same. So, there is a gradual shift to autonomous self driving cars. It might be that or something else but, that's where my suspicion lies. Your report has opened my eyes to trends. Posting according the trend might get your astounding result. It's worth looking into

yes this happens i dont really know what you posted but people tend to relate to what they feel so i guess it what they really need to see

The topic may have gained interest over time. YouTube can bring older Shorts back through search or recommendations, so the first push isn’t always the last.

I think it’s due to a shift in user behavior, your previously created content happens to align well with the current trend, which is why youtube is recommending your video.

Typically, it takes 1 to 3 months to boost a video's view count and attract viewers. After 6 months, it's not just a topic you can access; it's something many people pay for and it attracts a large audience. We can't predict trends and create effective, high-performing videos.

This is actually a good reminder that YouTube Shorts can have a much longer life than people think. I've always felt that publishing a Short and seeing it stop at 2k or 5k views doesn't necessarily mean it has reached its full potential.

I don't run a Shorts channel myself, so I wouldn't pretend to know the recommendation rules. On the ad side, I've seen a creative find a better audience later than the first results suggested. I'd check the traffic source and retention around when it picked up, and whether search impressions changed. Topic demand could be part of it, but one video probably isn't enough to call a pattern.

This is very interesting. I have never had luck with Shorts. They have always seemed so random with me

same here bro, that's why I'm so surprised about this one. Shorts might worth it if you hit dozen of million views every month. 55k in 3 years it's :
1- really useless for monetization
2- even monetized, It would be like $6 over 3 years ? None sense....

In my opinion, I think the topic itself could be a big reason for the delayed growth.
But still, YouTube doesn't always push Shorts based only on their initial performance.

Audience interest can change over time, and older videos can get another chance when the topic becomes more popular. That's probably why some Shorts with average metrics suddenly take off while better-performing ones don't.

the topic becoming more popular over time could be part of it. YT doesn’t necessarily give a short one chance at distribution. It can start getting picked up again through search or recs later as interest in the topic changes.
