Guest posting can be perfectly fine as long as it’s not a paid one, but paying for links solely for the sake of passing ranking signals becomes risky. My recommendation is to look for sites that are relevant and have some visitors and add

Paying for a guest post isn't the issue on its own. The problem starts when you're paying just to get a backlink that boosts rankings. I'd use sponsored links where needed and choose sites that actually fit the topic, rather than chasing ******** links for SEO.

Paid guest posts can still bring referral traffic and exposure, but paying specifically for ranking links is risky.

Google expects paid links to use rel="sponsored" or nofollow. I'd focus on relevant websites and real audience value rather than buying links just for SEO.

I have always felt paid links are not the problem by themselves; the way we use them matters.

Google clearly says paid links should use 'rel="sponsored"' (or 'nofollow') so they don't pass ranking credit. The bigger risk is building links just to manipulate rankings, especially through PBNs, excessive guest posts with keyword rich anchors, or large scale link exchanges.

I prefer focusing on relevant websites, natural anchor text, and links that can actually bring referral traffic. For me, relevance and quality matter more than just increasing the backlink count.

Policy says that paid/bought placements should use rel="sponsored" (or nofollow) so they’re not treated as endorsements. The same applies to sponsored articles and ads.

Paid guest posting can also raise site reputation abuse concerns when third-party content is published mainly to exploit a host site's ranking signals. This is separate from link spam, so using sponsored attributes alone doesn't address every potential policy issue.

for ex I can say that I have had quite some success with guest blogging on websites that generate traffic from the similar niche even if the DA of the website is quite low. If you use keywords-rich anchor texts for the links, then it may seem rather unnatural. So I like to have various anchor texts used first checking whether the website gets traffic at all. Also, some referral with the link would be cool.

Paid guest posting can also trigger site reputation abuse concerns when third-party content is published primarily to manipulate a host site's ranking signals. This is distinct from link spam, so adding sponsored attributes alone doesn't necessarily resolve the issue.
But yes, the important thing here is the content itself rather than the attribute of the linking page. In case of a sponsored blog post, this post can be considered spam, as the host page is publishing irrelevant content for ranking signals alone.

I am sure that these guest posting from the author who has paid for them will definitely be worth it if they provide something to the users. I am worried about these footprints/site which have keyword anchor that just post anything in the link.

I think it's important to separate paid advertising from paying purely for ranking benefits. If a guest post is sponsored, the link should be properly qualified with rel="sponsored" (or rel="nofollow"). The bigger concern is when paid placements are used to manipulate search rankings rather than provide value to readers. Do you think more website owners are now following this practice?
