Hi Guys

I am doing some research into ranking my website for Malay keywords within the Malaysian market if anyone has any experience with Malay SEO please let me know! i have nothing set up yet but just want to know what is best to do

What are the levels of competition for Malay keywords on Google Malaysia?
Are there still good opportunities for low competition keywords?
Do native Malay articles rank better than translated articles?
What kind of backlinks work best for Malay websites?
What techniques have worked best for you?

If you have had any experience working on websites targeting Malaysia please let me know!

What would you recommend focusing on?

Thanks!

I will begin with proper research on keywords and use precise Malay keywords that have definite search intent i feel that content in native language and style is crucial rather than translating English content i will also construct proper site architecture and internal links and after that will go for good backlinks.

I’d begin by researching Malay keywords using Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs, especially long tail keywords with low competition. I’d focus on creating natural Malay content rather than simply translating English articles. Understanding local search intent and checking what competitors are ranking for is also important. For link building, I’d look for relevant Malaysian websites instead of chasing high DR alone. I’d also set up GSC and monitor local impressions, rankings, and traffic to understand what’s working.

I would first select Malay long tail keywords which are not competitive and see what type of pages rank in Google Malaysia for those keywords native and natural content can work better than direct translations of other content search intent site structure and internal linking will come first and then we can think about backlinking.

I think targeting native Malay keywords is a good opportunity especially with well researched long tail keywords Native written content can make a big difference because it sounds more natural to local readers I'd also focus on relevant Malaysian backlinks and understanding local search intent rather than just translating existing articles

Ranking in Google Malaysia (google.com.my) for Bahasa Melayu is generally much easier than English SERPs, with the exception of hyper-competitive niches like online casino and gambling.

A few key points to keep in mind before you start:

1. Native Content vs Direct Translation: Pure machine translation often struggles because locals rarely search using formal textbook Malay (Bahasa Baku). Searchers commonly use conversational phrasing, regional slang, or mix Malay and English terms. Having a native speaker adapt the copy makes a massive difference in matching actual search intent and keeping bounce rates low.
2. Domain & Hosting: A .my or .com.my ccTLD gives you an immediate geographic advantage on google.com.my. If you stick with a standard .com, host the site in Singapore or Malaysia and configure your target country properly in Google Search Console.
3. Backlinks: Local relevance is king here. A handful of contextual links from local Malaysian blogs, regional forums (like Lowyat), and local business citations will move the needle far more than dozens of generic global guest posts.
4. Opportunity: There is still huge potential in long-tail informational queries and local lead gen where authority sites have not published comprehensive Malay guides yet. Focus on building tight topical clusters first.

I will begin with keyword research considering the search behavior of Malay speaking users in Malaysia it is possible that native written content could sound more natural rather than translated Additionally
i will pay attention to low competition keywords quality internal links and backlinks from relevant websites in Malaysia

I would focus on native Malay content, local keyword research and competitor analysis before spending on backlinks or technical SEO.

I would first conduct adequate research using the right keywords and concentrate on producing native Malay content as opposed to translated content search intent and language play a major role additionally i would seek out relevant Malaysian sites for link building purposes, and not just concentrate on Domain Authority/Page Rank.

If there's enough search volume, go for it
Might be a good idea to look at the historical trend as well

One of the easiest regions to rank with tiered link building and micro niche related content. You are on the right sub; just read old posts you will find tons of clues there than now.

  • Spot on. Direct translation usually misses local search intent entirely. Writing natively and targeting local long-tails makes a massive difference in conversion and rankings

For Malaysia, I would begin with correct Malay keyword research based on the local search intent and not simply translating English keywords.

Low competition, long-tail keywords still have a lot of scope. Naturally written Malay content will always be more successful than simple translated content.

Technical SEO, localized content, internal linking, and backlinks from relevant Malaysian sites are other factors that need consideration.

But most importantly, first analyze your competitors locally before investing a lot of time into link building.

one thing nobody mentioned, a lot of Malay queries overlap with Indonesian and indo sites show up on google.com.my more than you'd think. check where the top results are actually from before picking keywords, sometimes the Indonesian spelling has all the volume and the Malaysian one doesn't, or the other way round

What I would consider as an improvement is the analysis of search intent instead of simply translating English search terms into Malay language Natively written content sounds more natural and resonates better with Malaysians also i would first use long tail keywords and establish topical relevance rather than building lots of backlinks
