What Should I Check First in Google Analytics for My Blog?

In my experience, looking at where traffic comes from and using that as a basis for planning further steps helps improve user conversion.

Start with organic traffic, traffic sources, and engagement rate to see where visitors come from and how they interact with your blog. Also, track conversions to understand whether your traffic is bringing real results.

I think you should look into your traffic—where it’s coming from, which content is the most engaging, and what devices your users are using. These are fundamental yet crucial aspects for your blog.

Hi everyone,

I want to use Google Analytics to check how my blog is performing, but there are so many things to look at, lol.

Which things should I focus first to know if my blog is doing well? Should I look at visitors, traffic sources, or something else?

love to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance!
would be interested in looking into new visitors nd repeat visitors as well.this gives u an approximate idea of how helpful ur blog post is that people come back to read it again.in addition, it will be better to see the outcomes of compparison over a longer period of time rather than just a few days.

Start with traffic sources, top landing pages, and engagement rates to see where visitors come from and what keeps them reading.

I will check these steps in Analytics;
  • Users and Sessions: Check if your blog is attracting more visitors over time.
  • Traffic Sources: Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition to see where visitors come from.
  • Top Blog Posts: Open Reports, then Engagement, then Landing page to identify which posts attract the most traffic.
  • Engagement Rate: Check whether visitors are engaging with your content.
  • Conversions: Track newsletter signups, contact form submissions, or other important actions.
Compare the last 28 days with the previous 28 days. Focus on traffic growth, top-performing posts, and conversions, not just total visitors.

GSC is also worth using alongside Analytics because it shows the queries and impressions behind your traffic.

Yep, Analytics is used to track what the visitors do on the website, whereas GSC will show what brings them there. I use GSC to identify queries with high impressions and low CTR, since sometimes some changes in the title or meta-description could help.

I’d start with organic traffic, top-performing pages, and user engagement. These metrics help you understand which articles attract visitors, where they come from, and what content keeps them interested. Then, use Google Search Console alongside Analytics to identify opportunities to improve SEO and grow your blog.

Focus on organic traffic, traffic sources, and engagement first. This helps you see where visitors come from and which posts they like most. No need to track everything at once!
