Mistake 1: Reporting rankings without business context.
Visibility is useful, but it doesn't explain lead quality or revenue.

Mistake 2: Comparing unequal periods.
Seasonality and different date ranges can distort the comparison.

Mistake 3: Showing percentages without actual numbers.
A large percentage increase from a tiny baseline may have little business impact.

A good report should explain what changed, what may have caused it, and what needs investigating next.

Numbers are important. The interpretation is what makes them useful.

A great principle for every marketer

Dont just report numbers show the impact, explain the why and define the next step.

yes, ranking can definitely increase without an increase in lead if the traffic does not correspond to what the business offers. do you track conversion rate in your analytics or just organic traffic and keyword rankings?

I’d also include conversions and qualified leads alongside rankings and traffic, so clients can see the actual business impact of SEO. Comparing the same date ranges year over year can also help avoid misleading conclusions caused by seasonality.

That's a good point. I would also look at attribution and causation. A report can show traffic and leads going up, but that doesn't automatically mean SEO caused all of that growth. Seasonality, brand campaigns, paid traffic, etc. can all play a role.
I think a good SEO report should explain not just what happened, but also what likely caused it. That's where the numbers become useful.

I think the biggest reporting mistakes are cherry-picking positive keywords, ignoring traffic drops, and using vanity metrics without context. A good SEO report should explain what changed, why it matters, and what actions we’ll take next.

Sometimes traffic drops because a page lost rankings for just one important keyword, even if the overall numbers look fine.

Changes in GA4 tracking can also make SEO reports misleading. For example, if a conversion event starts firing twice after an update, reported conversions may increase even though actual leads haven't changed. Checking tracking changes before comparing results can prevent this kind of confusion.

This is a valid point in my opinion the SEO report must inform the client on what was improved rather than showing ranking changes traffic conversions and leads provide much more accurate information percentages may lead to misunderstandings which is why the numbers need to be included

even without generating any new lead we can increase our number of visitors. that is why I suggest analyzing the sources of traffic, their action nd the number of conversions. ranking also have to be analyzed, but they provide no information on our bottom line.
