Anyone here doing Digital PR? Does it actually help with AI search?

Digital PR helps build brand authority beyond backlinks. I think trusted brand mentions can also support AI search visibility, but results may vary by niche.

Digital PR is more about earning media coverage and brand mentions than just building backlinks. I think it can help with brand visibility in AI search, but results depend on the quality of coverage, brand authority and how often the brand is mentioned across relevant sources.

imo digital pr is just link building with a better story attached lol. the links usually stick longer because they come from real news sites, and i have seen brand mentions show up in ai overviews after a few solid placements

This distinction is based on the fact that traditional linkbuilding begins with "where can we get a link?" while Digital PR begins with "what do we have to show the media that is really worth mentioning?" This may include original data, a good industry story or maybe expert commments that generate natural coverage. As far as AI search goes, in my opinion, it is important to make your brand recognizable in trusted sources rather than try to attract AI mentions. The mentions and citations in Chatgpt and Perplexity are definitely worth being analyzed but you shouldn't guarantee that they will appear after every single PR campaign....
That makes it much clearer: start with what's worth covering, not where to get a link. I have a client who's a genuine expert in his niche, so I'll build coverage around his expert comments and insights. Agreed on AI search too: build recognition in trusted sources and treat ChatGPT/Perplexity mentions as a bonus.

Biggest difference i see is digital PR is built around a story or data worth covering, links are just a byproduct. Clients mostly pay for the research and the outreach to journalists, not the links themselves. For AI search i think the real win is getting mentioned across a bunch of trusted sites, but i wouldnt promise any specific citation in chatgpt or perplexity from one campaign.
Even research and outreach is getting done by ai

Yeah I recently ran a story like that. Generated a lot of really good links in sites that would've costed 5-6X the cost of the PR.

Funny enough, the actual wire didn't generate anything, it was mostly from the service's direct contact list.

I also approached journalists myself so despite it costing a lot less, it took a lot of effort.

The main difference I see is the starting point. Traditional link building usually starts with a target page and a link you want, while digital PR starts with a story, data point, or expert angle that a publication would actually want to cover. The link or mention is the result of the coverage, not the pitch itself.

A typical campaign tends to follow a few steps: find a newsworthy angle from the business, such as survey results, an original study, or a clear expert opinion on a trend; build a short press angle and a small set of target publications that cover that topic; pitch it personally rather than in bulk; and then follow up once. If the story is weak, outreach volume usually does not fix it.

For AI search, I would measure it differently from classic link building. Instead of only counting links, I would track whether the brand name appears next to the topic in coverage, whether the same facts or quotes are repeated by more than one source, and whether AI answers start naming the brand for related questions. Unlinked mentions can still help here, because AI systems often rely on repeated, consistent brand associations across trusted sources, but they are harder to prove than a direct link, so a before-and-after check of the same set of questions is useful.

Yes, Digital PR makes a noticeable difference, especially for LLM search visibility and AI Overviews.
Traditional link building usually prioritizes target anchor text and DA/DR metrics on standard guest posting sites. Digital PR, on the other hand, centers around newsworthy stories, unique proprietary data, expert commentary, or product reviews picked up organically by mainstream publications.
From what we see with LLM engines (like ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews), they heavily prioritize entity recognition and unlinked brand mentions across recognized authoritative news sources. Even when a high-tier publication provides a nofollow link or just an unlinked brand citation, the AI models index those contextual co-occurrences. If your brand is consistently referenced alongside your niche's core problems in high-authority editorial press, AI engines naturally start citing it as a top recommended source.
