Can technical seo issues reduce the value of backlinks?

Yes technical SEO matters because even strong backlinks may have limited impact if the target page has crawlability or indexation issues check indexing internal links and page accessibility before building links.

We often focus on getting quality backlinks, but technical issues can sometimes prevent linked pages from being crawled or indexed properly.

Do you check the crawlability and indexation of a target page before building backlinks to it?
Indeed, always do an initial check before establishing any link. Check of the following apply, the site has 200 status. is not marked as noindex, is not blocked by robots. Text, canonical is set right, and it is marked as indexed in GSC. Otherwise, the links are useless.

Certainly, an unindexed target page renders your backlinks largely ineffective. If Googlebot is unable to render the page or becomes caught in a redirect chain, the link equity is effectively lost.

Exactly, for better results both need to work hand in hand.

Technical SEO issues can reduce the value of backlinks. Before building links, check whether the target page is crawlable, indexable, and working properly. Fixing these issues helps search engines find the page and understand its content.

Of course. If a link points to a page Google finds hard to crawl and index then, by definition, you can't leverage it as effectively. I review indexation crawlability standard tags and internal linking before I start building links. One thing I might miss is a page that I can check today (with indexation still active) but drops out after a refresh of the site.

Yes, I always check crawlability and indexation first. Even a quality backlink may have limited value if the target page can’t be crawled or indexed properly.

I usually check whether the page is getting impressions in GSC. It gives me a better idea of whether Google is picking it up.

Technical SEO should come first. Server logs can show whether Googlebot is wasting time crawling filter URLs like size and color variations instead of important pages. Thin filter pages are also worth reviewing, especially on large ecommerce sites. Good backlinks won't fix every crawling issue.

tbh i think it is better to find out if the page has already been indexed before looking for additional backlinks. ipt makes no sense to create backlinks to a page that google can’t read at all. even a simple crawl can be helpful.

Absolutely, technical SEO matters a lot for backlinks. I always check indexability, redirect chains, and internal linking to make sure link value isn't wasted.
