Hi guys,

Google keeps ranking my homepage instead of the article I created to a specific keyword. I already added internal links to the article, but it still ranks the wrong page.
what should I check next.

I would first ensure that the homepage and the article share similar intent. I would also consider checking out the title/H1, anchor text and internal linking of the article

first check and make sure the article is indexed properly in google search console. if it is not indexed, the home page may keep showing.

Is the article indexed,Strengthen title, H1, headings, and content around the specific query. Check whether the homepage has significantly stronger backlinks.

Make the article more focused on the keyword and remove any strong signals from the homepage targeting it.

another thing i would look into is whether other pages on the website link to the homepage with the exact keyword rather than the article. this might be confusing for google. i would also compare titles nd intents of both articlles before making any changes.

Home page always carries a lot of weight if the targeted keyword is first already targeted and got indexed in the Google search. If the article with your targeted keyword is created at a later stage then it is possible that Google will review all possible signals and check which page is good to rank for a specific query.

The decision should be taken by you to see that you want which page, a home page or an article page to rank for your targeted keyword. It is also possible that in future it can also lead to keyword cannibalization where multiple pages from your domain will compete with each other to get rank in the search results.

i would verify URL inspection in search console to know whether the article has been indexed by google nd which page is receiving impressions for this query.it happens many times that the article gets inddexed well but google prefers the homepage due to the placement of both the pages.

I will employ GSC to discover the URL that is being impressed upon nd then compare the titles and intent. Internal linking may not be helpful where the homepage use the same keyword.

despite me adding some internal links, sometimes it happens that Google takes its sweet time in updating those page.
Is there any impression recorded in the GSC? Is the homepage working on its own?

Right, start by analyzing if the homepage and the article are targeting the same keyword in GSC, and then try to align the content and anchor text of each page towards a different purpose, instead of just dropping the signals.

There are several reasons why this is happening, here are suggestions you can try. There is a clash in your keywords, recheck and correct. Check your GSC, the article page might not be performing very well which will still make your homepage to keep showing up. The time you added the articles link also matters, it might not have started performing yet, give it some time.

what kind of pages are ranking on competing sites for that query — homepages, service pages or articles? i'd check that before weakening the homepage. if the results are mostly service pages, an article may be the wrong format even with more internal links.

Check if your homepage targets similar keywords bro Add clearer topical signals to the article, link to it with relevant anchors, and make sure both pages serve different search intent.

the first step is to do an ID check via GSC and find out the URL that receives impressions because of that keyword and the kind of pages that rank on the first page. sometimes, google finds the homepage to be more relevant despite having link in that particular article. also, it is important to see if both the pages have the same keywords.

Ofc, I have observed at time traffic that is cheap nd seems wonderful from the dash but doesn’t yield any fruitful results in business. That’s why I normally endeavor to know the actual position after the click.
what traffic networks have worked for you?

afterwards, I will use the GSC ID check to see which URL is receiving impression with the keyword. I can compare both pages nd their intent here. I have observed in many instance that internal linking does not work much when the homepage nd the article are targeting the same thing.
