When building or buying backlinks, what’s one mistake you learned from?

Maybe the link disappeared, the website turned out to be poor quality, or you overpaid.

What happened, and what do you check now to avoid that mistake?

The biggest mistake I made was evaluating sites on the basis of their DR and pricing without considering their real traffic and relevance. Now, I ensure that I evaluate the traffic history, number of indexed pages, and relevance of the linking page before investing any money.

And same here, DR can be perfect despite the fact that the website has very little visibility. Also, you should see whether that particular page that is linking ranks for something.

One mistake I’d avoid is choosing backlinks just because a site has high DR

A high DR doesn’t always mean the site is worth getting a link from

Now I’d rather check organic traffic, niche relevance and the quality of the content before spending money on any placement

buying too many from the same vendor in a short window. velocity spike gets you flagged regardless of link quality. spread it out across different sources now.

one mistake i would avoid is choosing backlinks only on a website high DR. a site can have good metrics but still be irreevant to your niche pr have little real trtaffic. now i would check topical relevance, organic traffic trends, content quality and whether the site has a natural link profile before considering a link. relvance and quality matters more than metrics alone

One mistake is focusing only on domain authority instead of relevance and traffic. Now I always check the website's niche organic traffic, backlink profile and whether the site looks genuine before buying a link.

using exact match anchors too aggressively. built a solid number of links over a few months, profile looked fine metric-wise, but the anchor ratio was completely off. had to disavow a bunch of them. mix in branded, naked URLs and generics or you're building a time bomb.

over optimizing exact match anchor text on a new domain is the worst mistake branded and naked urls are essential for a natural profile.

Once paid for a link that looked good on paper but the actual page was poor. Now I check the live page and its recent posts before paying

A high DR alone can be misleading since a site may have declining organic traffic or poorly indexed pages, so checking its traffic history and indexation before purchasing a backlink is essential

paying for a placement without checking the actual page is a mistake i'd avoid. the domain might look great, but your link could end up buried in an article full of unrelated outbound links. i'd check the page's relevance, whether it gets any real visitors and how the publisher handles paid links. i'd also make sure the placement terms are clear before paying, especially what happens if the article gets removed later.

One mistake I’d avoid is choosing backlinks based on DR alone. I’ve learned to look at the website’s relevance, real traffic, and content quality first. A relevant link from a genuine website is worth more than a high DR number.
