Yes, this is achievable, particularly in niches where there isn’t stiff competition.

However, for those niches that have competition, having relevant and high-quality backlinks can be very helpful.

Having good content and search intent qualifies a web page to rank, but relevant backlinks help it rank even better against other sites.

So just focus more on the authority of your website. Don't think about the number of links. Focus on acquiring or having decent domain authority. It's not just what Ahrefs says or what Moz said. These are third-party metrics that could be gamed but at the end of the day authority is still everything. So far it's clean and genuine

There are a lot of ways to dominate the market. I have seen millions of times when I was working at the agency where they build relevancy and high quality backlinks and still struggle while doorway pages outrank them for no reason . So I believe backlink quantity is still part of the game. That's the nature of competition - never put all your eggs in one basket. Recently seen a nice thread in here where he gives a nice explanation worth to have a read

Agreed. Low-competition keywords can rank without backlinks, but in competitive niches, relevant backlinks can give a website the extra push it needs.

Certainly, third-party data is just an indicator, not the whole story.

Authority should be determined by relevant backlinks, good content, and earned trust.

I would concentrate more on the quality of links than on the number of their DR/DA.

Good content and matching search intent are the foundation, but in competitive niches, relevant backlinks can make a real difference.
Yes, definitely! Content assists in achieving the search intent; however, if backlinks that have relevance are used, it can increase the authority of a page.

It’s all about linking the right content to the right pages.

i seen sites rank without many backlinks, especially for low competition keywords. Good content and search intent are the starting points, but in competitive niches, relevant backlinks can make a actual difference.

Those niche and keywords bring minimal to zero revenue. Donot waste time on such niches or keywords, better go aggressive with mid competition and high search keywords. Just my personal Opinion.

I've been using claude to do automated SEO like programmatic pages with keywords, and write blogs for me

This could be very time-saving; however, I would ensure that each page holds some value on its own and does not just focus on targeting certain keywords.

How are you ensuring quality and avoiding keyword cannibalization among your programmatic pages?

Of course it is possible i have seen the same ranking without any backlinks in niches which do not face much competition but then again,in niches where there is fierce competition quality backlinks can help a lot.

i feel that the keyword itself plays a major role in this scenario. certain pages receive traffic with minimal backklinks only bcz there is no good content on the subject matter. the problem comes from maintaining those rankings when the better sites target the same keywords.

Depending on the niche, this is totally possible
In fact, most niche sites start with nothing and gain traction along the way

Honestly, yes you can... but only up to a certain point.
If you're targeting low-competition long-tail keywords, a solid topical map with tight internal linking can easily get you to page 1. Semantic SEO and covering all entities will carry you further today than it did 3 years ago.
BUT, here is why going 100% linkless is a huge bottleneck:
  1. Speed & Scaling: Ranking with pure content takes forever. A few quality contextual links (or a clean 301 from an expired domain) acts as a fast-forward button for Google to trust your entities.
  2. Competitive Niches: Try ranking for any decent buyer-intent/money keyword without links—you’ll hit a glass ceiling real quick. The competitors who combine solid content with strong link juice will always outrank you.
  3. Indexation & Crawl Budget: Links aren't just for authority; they tell Googlebot to prioritize crawling your site, especially when dealing with programmatic or large AI-driven sites.
So can you rank without links? Yes, for easy info queries. Is it a smart strategy for a money site? Absolutely not. Links accelerate everything.

I concur. Lack of competition may help in the ranking of a webpage using low backlinks, but where there is stiff competition and targeting of similar keywords, it becomes crucial to focus on quality content and backlinks.

Agreed. A new site can rank without backlinks for specific, low competition queries, especially with strong topical coverage and good internal linking. As competition increases, relevant backlinks can become an important advantage, though they’re never a guarantee.
Yeah, I would start off by targeting low-comp long tails and then make sure that there are internal linking structures in place connecting those pages to each other. Once those pages get impressions, you will know where the backlinks are worth having.

That is correct! Long-tail keywords should be considered a first step.

The benefit of internal links is building up topic authority, and impressions will tell you which pages are worth doing backlinks for.
