If traffic tools show zero, is a link still worth anything?

Lots of sites out there with decent DR and real content but a flat line for organic traffic. Some have looked like that for a year or more.

One view is that relevance is what counts and traffic tools miss a lot of long tail. The other is that if Google sends a site no visitors, it probably doesnt pass much either.

With AI answers taking clicks, traffic numbers are dropping on good sites too. So maybe traffic just tells us less about a link than it used to.

What do you look at now when you decide if a link is worth getting?
Has that changed for you this year?

Traffic is a proxy for crawl attention, not for link value. Before I look at DR or an Ahrefs traffic number I check two things: is the page hosting the link actually indexed, and does the site rank for anything at all, even ten long tail terms with no volume attached. A flat line with 40 indexed pages floating around page two is a live site. A flat line with almost nothing in the index is a dead one, and a link there does nothing no matter what the DR says.

Your AI answers point is the real change this year. Clicks are falling on sites whose impressions are fine, so a traffic estimate is now measuring something further from Google's opinion of the page than it was two years ago. I weight keyword count and top 100 spread over visits for that reason.

One from our own data: a Canadian plumber site, DR 43, 1,818 traffic, 39 keywords in the top 3. A good chunk of the pages linking to it are scored at zero traffic by the tools. The rankings moved anyway.

So no, zero traffic is not a veto. Zero index is.

I'd check its history too. Was visibility always low, or did it drop before those zero estimates started? That context would help me judge the link better than DR and the current traffic estimate alone.

I wouldn’t judge a site on DR or traffic alone. I’d check whether the site has a clear niche and whether its pages are actually indexed.

Try to check relevance, indexed pages, real content, and the quality of its backlink profile.

Zero estimated traffic is a warning sign, but it doesn’t automatically make the link worthless.

I’d look at relevance, real content, indexing and outbound link quality first. Zero traffic alone wouldn’t kill the deal, but I’d be cautious if everything else looks weak too.
