Literally followed all the basic whitehat advice and spent last weekend updating 5 of my old top performing articles that were slipping dwon page1. i added fresh info better imags anf tweaked headers. checked search console today and they dropped eevn further to page 2 like whyy does google penalize u for making content better now?? should i revert back to the old text or leave it.

It could just be a temporary drop in rankings. My blog also experienced ranking drops when I was updating its content in the early stages. I continued working on SEO, and the rankings improved after some time.

Yeah, drop in rank during content update is possible; however, I will also monitor the performance of pages through GSC. If both impressions and positions continue to fall, then it will be worthwhile to check out the search intent and actions taken by my competitors.

Sometimes a rewrite changes the page relevance even if the content looks better. I review the parts you changed most heavily first.

I would not revert them just yet Google can take time to reassess updated content and changing several posts at once makes it harder to spot the cause. Check search console for query and page level drops compare impressions and positions, and see if competitors improved or your edits removed anything that was already working. Give it a little time before making more changes.

check GSC first to see which pages and queries dropped. maybe the updates changed the search intent or removed something that was working before.
Did you change the content heavily or just update few changes?

I believe it's a small, temporary drop to your previous rankings and it will correct itself after 1-2 weeks time.

Google doesn’t necessarily penalize updates. Rankings can fluctuate, so I’d give it a little time before reverting. Check which queries lost positions in GSC first; that’ll help you figure out what actually changed.

5 posts dropping at once is frustrating lol but i wouldn't rush to revert. give it a little time and check what changed in the serp before making another big edit

Because you have generic seo content on it (written for seo engines?)
Check tech seo (crawl waste on your site= categories, tags, deep siloing, etc....)

Happy Weekend !

sometimes google tends to do some strange things with updates even if the updatte looks much better than the previous one.since there have been drops for all 5 posts u should see if u have made any common changes to all of them such as headings or internal linking before making further content changes.

however i would not hurry nd try to revert the changes right away. there might be a need for google to reevaluate the page nd the next days fall in ranking would not provide sufficient infformation.it is important to determine if the same pages have dropped in ranking for all search terms or just a few of them.

i wouldn't revert everything just yet. a few days is way too early to tell if the updates actually hurt your rankings. i'd check when google last crawled those pages, then compare which queries lost positions in gsc. sometimes changing headers or rewriting sections can shift what a page is targeting without you realizing it. did you change the main keywords or just add fresh information?

I wouldn’t revert everything just yet. Rankings can fluctuate after updates, so give it some time and check GSC for changes in queries, impressions, and clicks. If the drop persists, compare the old and new content to see what might have changed.

honestly speaking, I do not think that everything should be rolled back at this moment. In some cases, I noticed that small updates in the content can affect the ranking position, even if the new version is better. have a look at GSC to find out which keyword have disappeared.

Never edit header ranks on Rankers lol! youhh ruined the topical match so revert old H2s and only change the publish date next time.

1) You very rarely want to mess around with page 1 rankings unless you really know what you're doing.

2) The big mistake everyone makes is they define: "good content" and then apply that judgement to change content, and assume what they think is good content, is what will rank.

This is faulty. Good content is not good content.

Good content is content that resolves the situations of the searchers.

This is exactly what core updates do. They re-rank based on Google having updated the centroid for what the ideal page looks like for different search queries.

You just moved your page away from the centroid, so you dropped.

Note: There's also a 3rd thing to consider: Sometimes, you will drop before you go back up depending on your site. Whatever you do, don't change a THING on the page.

If you change, drop, and change again, you're locked. This is a part of the algo to detect 'testing' or trying to game the algo.
