Question: Is average position useful?

Yes. It provides context about search visibility.

Question: Can it be misleading?

Yes. Query mix, devices, countries and changing search behaviour can affect the aggregate figure.

Question: What should I review alongside it?

Clicks, impressions, individual queries, landing pages and relevant conversions.

Question: Should every campaign use the same success metric?

No. The right measurement depends on the site's goals.

Average position is one useful indicator, not a complete assessment of SEO performance.

I monitor the average position although I do not base myself only on that Clicks impressions and the performance of the landing page can provide more information as to whether the search engine optimization efforts have brought in valuable traffic.

Average position, but I never judge SEO performance by that number alone, clicks, conversions, and which queries are bringing traffic tell me much more.

A better average position is nice, but it doesn’t always mean better results for the business.

average position is useful for getting a general idea of visibility but I wouldn’t judge SEO performance by that alone. A site can improve its average position without getting many more clicks if the queries driving that change have little search demand.

average position is rather a benchmark for me than an outcome.at times a page can be ranked at a lower position but still generate good traffic bcz of relevance to certain keywords.it is usually more important for me to know what kind of queries drive traffic nd if that traffic converts.do u consider average position more rellevant for fresh pages or old ones?

Exactly. Average position gives us a quick overview, but clicks and landing page performance help us understand whether we're actually attracting valuable traffic. I also check individual queries to identify which keywords are improving and where further optimization is needed.

Absolutely. Better rankings don't always translate into better business results. I prefer to look at the bigger picture, including organic traffic, search intent, and conversions. Rankings are important, but what that traffic delivers matters more.

True. Average position can improve simply because a site starts ranking for more low-volume queries. That's why I always compare it with impressions, clicks, and the actual search terms driving traffic. Otherwise, the average alone can give us the wrong impression of SEO progress.

Good question. I find average position useful for both new and established pages, but I use it differently. For fresh pages, it helps me monitor early visibility and ranking progress. For older pages, I focus more on ranking stability, traffic trends, and conversions. What matters most is whether the page is improving for the right keywords.

Agreed, average position is useful for spotting trends, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. I usually care more about whether impressions are turning into clicks and meaningful conversions.

Yes! Rankings are only one part of the picture. Impressions, clicks, and conversions matter most when measuring the real impact of SEO.

A drop in average position doesn't always mean rankings are getting worse. When a site starts appearing for more long-tail queries at lower positions, the overall average can fall even if its main keywords remain stable. Checking which new queries gained impressions helps explain the change.

when there is something that i think might be wrong, the average position becomes my go to metric rather than being an everyday one.if there is a drop in the number of clicks then this will allow me to know if it is due to a rankking issue or if they are not clicking on the results.

I will perform the average position check in case I see some changes in clicks and impressions. In some cases, the average position decrease as the page performs well on long tail keywords even though there were no change in the ranking of the main keywords. It is better to analyze specific query nd see whether the pages generate traffic or not. The average position may provide some clues but should not be the only source of information in SEO.
