What is the more important for backlinks in 2026.

I’d choose topical relevance over high DR. A backlink from a trusted website in your niche can bring more relevant traffic and make more sense for your site than a link from a high-DR website with no connection to your topic. DR is a third-party metric, so I wouldn’t judge link quality by that number alone.

i’d choose topical relevance over high DR especially when the site has genuine traffic and publishes content related to my niche a high DR link from an unrelated site can look impressive in a report but i’d rather earn links that make sense contextually and can bring relevant visitors
 
I’d prioritize topical relevance over DR. A high-DR link from an unrelated site may look good in a report, but a link from a relevant site with quality content is more meaningful. If possible, I’d aim for sites that have both strong authority and niche relevance.

Yes agreed, Relevant backlinks are more effective, if your sell dental product then target dentists and health blogs, to get links from take interviews of the dentists and publish on your website, the dentist will give a link back to you as well..
 
yes niche similarity is important and then if two sites are equally relevant so I would take the site with more traffic, organic traffic.
 
In my opinion in 2026 the natural, descriptive anchor text without excessive exact match keywords is necessary for healthy backlink profile. But I think that's not enough because anchor text is only single factor. The other factors like quality, relevance and trustworthiness of the linking website matter a lot in this journey. The best prioritize backlinks order is this topical relevance, quality, natural anchor text, domain quality reference and the last one is anchor text diversity. Your idea of natural descriptive anchor text is safe and also best for long term approach but don't focus on just this one alone, you should prioritize others also.
 
backlinks spread need adding of different keyword/topics with same website link to certain many research outlist of website in target keyword niche searchies.
 
A natural link from a related niche can be more valuable than an unrelated high-DR link.
 
I would go for topical relevance rather than DR. A link from a related site is much better than high DR sites irrelevant to your niche. DR is a good metric to check on a site, but I would look at their traffic, content quality and link profile before building backlinks.

IMO, topical relevance matters more. High DR looks great on paper, but that doesn't mean the actual linking page is worth much.
