Is brand mentions volume now more important than backlinks for AI visibility?

I've been thinking about how AI search engines like chatgpt and google AI overviews decide which brands to mention in their answers. Do you think brand mentions across relevant websites now matter more than traditional backlinks or are backlinks still a stronger signal?

Would love to hear your thoughts and any real world case studies.

I don’t think brand mentions have replaced backlinks, relevant mentions can help build trust and make a brand more recognizable, while good backlinks still matter for SEO.

Work on both instead of chasing mention volume alone.

tbh, I prefer having my name featured on some sites that are relevant rather than going after hundred of site irrelevant to me. Backlink do work but it is possible that having your name mentioned on some sites matters more than backlinks.

to be honest, having a brand that has been discussed in different sources makes ai get better understanding of the brand reputtation. however backlinks also have their role to play. i would monitor both nd see which factors really make a difference in getting ai mentions.

imo getting mentioned organically on websites which have something to do with ur industry niche would be more valuable than just gathering any mention at all. backllinks are still important for SEO, so i would get both types. has anyone tried that approach on a website with stable rankings but no mentions?

brand name spread with backlinks need adding with different keyword include brand name to spread on backlinks pages for outlist of brand when research on related keyword niche search.

feeling like mentions are pulling ahead for AI research. I've seen brands with average link pro5 but strong PR/mentions get named more. would not ignore backlinks completely, while chasing real mentions looks useful now for AI visibility dude

Yes, this will be even better if we focus on important brand mentions while also keeping high quality n valuable backlinks in mind. Backlinks for google Serp and brand mentions for AI engines!!

Both still matter but mentions are getting more weight for AI answers. If a brand keeps showing up naturally on sites that already rank well, the AI is more likely to pull it in.

I don't think brand mentions replace backlinks. Backlinks remain important for traditional SEO authority, while relevant brand mentions can strengthen brand recognition across AI search. Ahrefs research found strong correlations between web mentions and AI brand visibility, but correlation doesn't prove causation.

My approach combines both: building quality backlinks while earning contextual brand mentions on relevant, authoritative websites.

Obviously, backlinks are not only beneficial for rankings but also mandatory sometimes but I specifically want to know how useful brand mentions can be for ranking in AI search engines. But then again if we rank well on google, AI search engines are more likely to discover us and recognize that we exist in the first place, right?

difficult to measure from mention counts alone i would track down the sources that the AI answers cite in my industry and checks whether my brand also starts appearing there

No. A higher volume of brand mentions doesn't necessarily mean better AI visibility.
Just focus on your SEO. If you rank in the top 10, AI will often pick you up automatically.

If you want to do some extra things to improve your AI visibility, try LinkedIn, Medium, Substack, Quora, and Reddit.
Besides ranking in the top 10, these are the only things that have worked for me to get listed by AI.

For AI visibility, relevant brand mentions seem stronger, but combining them with quality backlinks remains the smartest strategy.

I will not look for mentions just becuz I want to do so. some mention from the relevant websites might carry more value than having my brand name mentioned on some irrelevant blogs. I will keep getting gud backlink nd pay attention to what the AI software cites from the websites.

I think both matter, but brand mentions alone aren’t enough. Backlinks still help build authority, while consistent brand mentions across trusted, relevant websites can help AI systems recognize your brand. The best strategy is to combine quality backlinks, genuine brand mentions, and strong, relevant content.

Relevant brand mentions improve AI visibility, but quality backlinks still matter. Combining both delivers stronger long-term SEO results.

I'd focus on both. Quality backlinks still matter for SEO, while relevant brand mentions can build visibility in AI answers. Relevance and authority matter more than raw volume.

Relevant backlinks still matter for traditional SEO, while consistent brand mentions across trusted, relevant sources may help build recognition and credibility for AI visibility. So focus on both rather than chasing mention volume alone.
Quality, context, and genuine authority matter more than simply counting links or mentions, and AI search is constantly evolving.
